Heroes’ HRG: Almost the Flash

One interesting surprise buried in The Flash Companion is the fact that during the development for the 1990 Flash TV Series, CBS wanted to cast Jack Coleman as Barry Allen. Yes, Heroes very own Noah Bennet, the man with the horn-rimmed glasses.

From the interview with Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo:

BILSON: You know what? The network offered the role to Jack Coleman, who used to be on Dynasty, and he wouldn’t do it because he wouldn’t wear the suit. That’s what I remember.

So what might Coleman have been like as Barry?

Here’s Barry Allen from his first appearance in Showcase #4, alongside a picture of Jack Coleman from Dynasty a couple of years before The Flash went on the air, and another picture of him as today’s audience would recognize him.

Well, he certainly would have looked the part!

Also, John Wesley Shipp was Bilson & De Meo’s second choice for the role. Their first was Richard Burgi, who went on to lead the duo’s later show, The Sentinel. CBS went with Shipp because, in the network head’s words (according to De Meo), “I can see that guy on a lunchbox.”

I can’t get over the fact that Coleman didn’t take on the role. He certainly has the physical apperance to present Allen on screen. And he has the acting talent which the character certainly deserves.

I’m going to put this out there, and I’m sure not everyone will agree, but I just wondered what other fans would think of Micheal C Hall (Dexter, Six feet under) as in the lead role of Wally West in “The Flash” film. Providing it does get made.

Actually, I believe the real reason Coleman did not accept the role was that after many years of television (Dynasty) he wanted to do Broadway. He starred in a New York production of Grease as the lead Danny, and numerous other stage productions. There’s an interview with his wife somewhere around the net confirming that. Jack is an excellent actor and he definitely looks the part, man, it really sucks that he didn’t accept the role, but I guess things happen for a reason. He’s even more legendary playing Noah Bennet.

How things change in just a few years, that at point a role on Heroes could be called ‘legendary’ and today the show is remembered as mostly an absymal, wrongheaded disaster.
