Quick Thoughts: Twitter Through 2009-03-22 (including Hotel Madness)

Category: General — By Kelson
  • Saw Watchmen. Better than expected. Spectacular, detailed, but unsubtle and gored-up. Best music cue: “Everybody Wants To Rule the World” #
  • OK, I am officially sick of the phrase, “What recession?” #
  • Read Mysterius the Unfathomable #1-2. Annoyed at first that the only skeptic is portrayed as a total a-hole. OTOH, so is everyone else. #
  • San Diego Comic-Con hotel list and prices are up. Rooms go on sale Thursday morning. #
  • 24 hours to go until SDCC hotel madness…after which I probably WILL want to be sedated. #
  • Interesting: #voteearth = switch your lights off for one hour on 3/28 to promote action on global warming voteearth2009.org #
  • Retweeting @SpeedsterSite: iFanboy names Wally as one of the most underused characters in the DCU. #
  • Countdown: 14 days to Flash: Rebirth #
  • Pics of Flash Jay Garrick on Friday’s Batman: Brave and the Bold #

Special Report: Comic-Con International Hotel Day

  • ComicCon hotel prep: Firefox+Win for compatibility, desktop in case wifi goes out, other sites up in Chrome so crash won’t take out Fx. #
  • ComicCon Hotel Rush: filled with antici… #
  • …pation. #
  • ComicCon: In the Waiting Room! #
  • “We’re sorry. All circuits are busy now.” Over and over and over and over. #
  • Why the hell am I live-tweeting Comic-Con Hotel Reservations? #
  • OK, now I know that it takes 20 minutes for me to start getting annoyed with the #comiccon reservation line. #
  • Every once in a while I get a 2nd or even 3rd ring before comiccon hotel line goes to “all circuits are busy now” msg. false hope… #
  • I hope the “waiting room” page for comiccon hotels is actually doing something and not just sitting there. #
  • OK, the comiccon hotel waiting room page DOES hit the network every once in a while. It must be doing SOMETHING. #
  • Last two years I got through the ComicCon hotel reservations by 10:04. It’s 10:05 and I’m still in the “waiting room.” #
  • On the plus side I’m starting to see “success!” posts from other people on Twitter. #
  • Swivel chair picked this time to fall apart. Reassembled. Still waiting in comiccon hotel queue. #
  • Phone connected! #
  • Got through comiccon hotel process on phone. Left top 5 choices, name addr & phone # and they’ll call back for credit card info. *whew!* #
  • *sigh* ComicCon hotel reservation has my name & addr wrong. Can’t fix online b/c they don’t have the CC yet, call center closed for the day #

Flash: Rebirth #3 Solicit

Category: Flash News — By Kelson

Newsarama has a preview of DC’s June Solicitations, featuring The Flash: Rebirth #3.

The Flash: Rebirth #3

Flash: Rebirth #3Written by Geoff Johns
Art and covers by Ethan Van Sciver

At last, the answer to the question that’s plagued DC fans for decades: Who’s faster, Superman or The Flash? Call your bookie and bet the farm, because you’ve never seen a run like this – and if speedsters keep dying at the pace they’re going, you might never see another one again!

Retailers please note: This issue will ship with two covers. For every 25 copies of the Standard Edition (with a cover by Ethan Van Sciver), retailers may order one copy of the Variant Edition (with a cover by Ethan Van Sciver). Please see the Previews Order Form for more information.

On sale June 10 • 3 of 5 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Comment #1. That question of who’s faster? It’s been answered many times over. It’s always close, and if there’s a winner, it’s always the Flash.

Comment #2. Nothing says “Bringing back Flash from the dead” like “Killing off a bunch of Flashes.” I swear DC is trying to kill my interest in this book a little more every time they release new information about it.

Battlestar Galacticake

Category: Off-Topic — By Kelson

Totally off-topic, but….

BSG Cake – Angled, originally uploaded by alenxa.

My wife baked a cake in the form of Batttlestar Galactica for last night’s BSG finale. More photos and making-of notes in her Battlestar Galacticake set.

And yes, it tasted good too!

Speed Reading: Flashbacks, Movies and March Madness

Category: Flash History, Fun — By Kelson

Comics Should Be Good is running a set of March Madness character polls. In the first round, Wally West outraced Death, but despite a last stand, the Thing clobbered Barry Allen. Voting will pick up again on Monday, with the Flash (Wally) up against Rorschach.

Kaiser the Great talks about his first two comics, including Flash v.1 #257.

madripoor_rose writes about the 1990 Flash TV series.

Geek Six includes the Flash — any Flash — in their list of Top 5 DC Characters Deserving a Movie, saying that while super-speed might be hard to portray, “the real stars will be Flash’s rogues’ gallery.”

Flash Chronicles and Wednesday Comics

Category: Flash News — By Kelson

Nerdage confirms that Flash Chronicles will feature Barry Allen. Since the Chronicles line of trade paperbacks is supposed to start at the beginning and run through chronologically, I can only assume that DC considers Barry Allen to be the “original” and not that Jay Garrick guy who inconveniently appeared 16 years earlier. *sigh*

Newsarama has more on Wednesday Comics, which will include a weekly Flash feature, including some promo art. (via SpeedsterSite)

Time to Upgrade the Web: IE8 Released

Category: Off-Topic — By Kelson

Internet Explorer.Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 yesterday, for Windows XP and Vista. So if you’re still running IE6 it’s once again time to think about upgrading. (Assuming, of course, that you’re not locked in by corporate policy or another piece of software.)

IE6 is now two versions behind the current release.

IE6 is almost 8 years old (it was released in 2001).

IE6 is lacking in many capabilities that all other modern web browsers have, in web technology, in security, and in features you can use.

You can read a review at Wired, a write-up from the IE team, or a summary of technical changes from WaSP.

Of course, Internet Explorer isn’t the only option out there. There’s Firefox, Opera, Chrome and a host of other alternative browsers that are worth checking out.

If you’re still running Windows 2000 or some other old version of Windows that can’t run IE7 or IE8, I’d absolutely recommend Firefox or Opera. Either will be much better than IE6, both will run on Windows 2000, and Opera will even run on Windows Me and Windows 98 (but you really ought to move to something more current than Windows Me.)

Wednesday Comics and Blackest Night

Category: Flash News — By Kelson

Two bits from Newsarama

First, DC is launching a 12-part weekly series called “Wednesday Comics,” attempting to recapture the feel of old-style Sunday comic serials in newspapers. Each character will get a full-page installment each week — and the Flash is one of the characters. (No word on which one — could be Barry Allen to tie into the Barry-focused relaunch, could be Wally West to throw us Wally fans a bone.)

Second, there’s a two-page preview of Blackest Night #0, featuring a full-page Barry Allen.

San Diego Hotel Booked

Category: Fandom — By Kelson

Well, I jumped into the fray of the Comic-Con International hotel reservation system and made it across to the other side, getting through by phone after 1 hour and 20 minutes. I never did make it past the “waiting room” page online.

The weird thing about the phone reservation system is that I don’t actually know which hotel I’ve gotten yet. They took my name, contact info and top 3+ choices (I gave them 5), then handed the info to their processing center. They’ll call back (later, I assume, after the rush is over) to let me know which hotel I got. I do have a backup that I reserved directly, but the convention discount is significant, especially when you add up four days.

It was interesting watching commentary streaming by on Twitter (search for “comiccon,” “comic-con” or “comicon”) as people started out commenting, then complaining, and eventually celebrating (after about an hour) when they finally got through. Or really letting loose when the system dropped them.

Didio on Flash Numbering

Category: Flash News — By Kelson

So, will the post-Rebirth relaunch of The Flash start with #1, #351, #600…? Dan Didio answers in the latest 20 Answers and 1 Question at Newsarama.

14) The Flash relaunch after Flash: Rebirth. Will that continue with the old numbering, or will it launch with a new #1?

DD: There’s a strength to a #1 when we present it in initial sales, it creates that sense that this is a wonderful jump-on point. Everyone always comes and asks us what the best ways to attract new readers is, and one of the best methods we’ve got is putting a “#1” on something, because it helps the readers to feel that they’re getting in on the ground floor.

Conversely, the continuing numbering, once you get past those early numbers, those higher numbers creates that sense of history for those characters and gives the sense that they have longevity.

So we’re still discussing it, but I imagine you’re going to see a new Flash #1 after the end of Rebirth [emphasis added] – but we are discussing the overall numbering. The more interesting question is, if we do go to the original numbering, what number would we pick it up at? Some people would argue, with a good point, that the Wally West issues should add in there, but should the Bart issues? It’s an interesting argument. Right now, though, I’m thinking you’ll see a Flash #1 for sure.

I actually posed the question of what number picking things up with Flash number should start, and the argument in the room was very clear as to whether or not we would jump from Barry’s original run to this new run of Barry…but for right now, I feel very comfortable in saying that after Flash Rebirth, there will be a new Flash #1 – who that Flash is, I still can’t say.

“I still can’t say.” Yeah. As if anyone believes that they would go to all this effort to bring Barry back with a big event miniseries and relaunch, then put someone else behind the mask.

Also Flash-related in this round: a discussion of in-house advertising and why a sure-bet like Flash: Rebirth got a valuable double-page ad in last month’s DC books. And regarding “co-features,” he points out that they’ve been choosing characters for backup features whom they believe could carry their own ongoing or mini-series.
