This Joker Will Be The Death of…Someone…But Who? (Review of Teen Titans #16)

Teen Titans #16 CoverThis issue of Teen Titans continues the “Death of the Family” story arc that has hit the Bat-titles with the Joker’s return to Gotham after a year’s absence.  He is creepier and more dangerous than ever before.  The Outlaws and Titans have begun to work together to stop the Joker’s attacks, but as we start this issue, Red Robin has been captured by the Joker and finds himself waking up next to Jason Todd!  As noted in the solicits, this issue also brings us the return of…Raven!

Barry Turns Himself In To…Grodd??? Yes! (Review of Flash #16)

Flash 16 coverThe “Gorilla Warfare” story arc is moving quickly toward next issue’s final chapter, and Barry Allen believes he has finally found the way to fight back against a very powerful King Gorilla Grodd.  The multiple story threads we’ve seen so far in this story are quickly coming together, and we are once again in for a very wild ride in Flash #16.  The solicitation for this issue promised a trip into the Speed Force, the “introduction of a major villain”, and the story of the “one and only date between Barry Allen and Iris West”.  Once again, the team of Manapul and Buccellato delivered on that and much more.  And, strangely enough, Occam’s Razor takes a significant role in this issue.

As we get ready to start this issue, Barry has been recovering from a vicious beating at the hands of King Grodd, carefully watched over by Patty Spivot.  At the end of last issue, Barry’s Speed Mind hit high gear, playing through several potential plans of action and their outcomes, with Barry awakening at the end of issue #15 with the realization that his only course of action was…to turn himself over to Grodd!

Young Justice Cancelled?!?!

Young_Justice_Invasion

Hey Speed Readers,

So yesterday afternoon Cartoon Network released their 2013-2014 Fall schedule with two very noticeable omissions: Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Young Justice, currently the only place where Flash Family fans can get even a semblance of satisfaction. The series appear to have been replaced by a revived version of the old Teen Titans cartoon entitled Teen Titans Go! (after the comic adaptation) and the latest Batman animated venture, Beware The Batman.

This Week: Flash #16 vs. Grodd, Plus Double Digital Flashbacks

Flash #16 Final CoverThis week sees the release of Flash #16 by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, part 4 of “Gorilla Warfare.” IGN has a preview. Meanwhile, we get two digital backissues each of Flash and Impulse from the 1990s.

The Flash takes Grodd into the Speed Force in a last-ditch effort to defeat the mad gorilla! And…he loses?! Plus: The Rogues, the introduction of a major villain and a look at the one and only date between Barry Allen and Iris West in The New 52!

Digital Flashbacks: ComiXology is adding Flash #102-103 (Wally West) and Impulse #49-50 to the digital back catalog.

Flash #102: Wally West vs. Mongul, the alien warlord who destroyed Coast City. Update: Check out Devin’s action figure recreation of the cover at The Fastest Fan Alive.

Flash #103: Linda has run off, the only clue being a photo of her with her ex– an ex whom Wally didn’t know about! But relationship troubles are the least of their problems, as the couple have to work together to stop a cult from raising a demon.

Impulse #49: Evil Eye is sent to a behavior modification camp run by Wally’s ne’r-do-well father, but Bart suspects the camp is going too far. It’s up to Impulse to find out what’s going on, and shut it down if he has to. This is the last issue of William Messner-Loebs’ run on the series.

Impulse #50: Todd Dezago takes over as writer. Impulse teams up with Batman, and we get our first hints of Bart’s “dark twin,” Inertia.

Do We Really Need A Race? Nah, the Fastest Man Alive Goes Toe-to-Toe with Supergirl! (Review of Supergirl #16)

Supergirl #16The Flash makes a rather significant guest appearance in Supergirl #16, which continues the “H’El on Earth” storyline that is being carried throughout the Superman line of books.  For those who aren’t following this arc (you should), a mysterious Kryptonian named H’El has appeared with an amped-up power set that seems to eclipse even all our combined Supers.  He has put a major wedge between Superman and Kara, rearranged Superboy’s DNA to the point that he has to wear Superman’s armor just to stay alive, and now plans to go back in time and “save” Krypton…at the cost of all life in our solar system!  At this point in the story arc, H’El has taken over the Fortress of Solitude and attempted to block everyone other than Kara from entry.  The Justice League has been helping Superman break in – including The Flash, who in the last issue of Superboy briefly appeared while trying to vibrate into the Fortress itself.
