Injustice: Gods Among Us Fighting Game Announced featuring The Flash

Hey Speed Readers,

It looks like we might finally be getting that sequel to Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe that people (like me) have been clamoring for, Injustice: Gods Among Us:

BURBANK, Calif. – May 31, 2012 – What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?  Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today announced Injustice: Gods Among Us , an all-new game in development by award-winning NetherRealm Studios, creators of the definitive fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat. The game is scheduled for release in 2013 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Wii U™ system from Nintendo.

Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts as a bold new fighting game franchise that introduces a deep, original story featuring a large cast of favorite DC Comics icons such as Batman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and many others.  Set in a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred, players will experience heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale.

“With Injustice: Gods Among Us , we are creating an all-new franchise with incredible battles set in the DC Comics Universe,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  “NetherRealm Studios is the extremely talented team behind the latest Mortal Kombat hit and it is developing a game unlike any other in the fighting genre.”

“We can’t wait to reveal Injustice: Gods Among Us because it will give our fans and gamers an epic experience as they battle like gods as their favorite DC Comics villains and heroes,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios.  “Our team is excited to make a fighting game that is filled with fast-paced action, incredible story-telling and iconic DC Comics characters.”

Yes, please! I’ve been waiting for a sequel to Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe since 2008. I loved that game and although it was short, playing as The Flash was an absolute blast. The only thing I could have really asked for is less of the Mortal Kombat characters and it looks like we got it! No MK characters means much more room for DC characters.

They’ve also released a trailer that can be viewed HERE!

While Injustice: Gods Among Us doesn’t appear to be a direct sequel to 2008’s popular Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe it will be made by the same development team that brought us that game and the latest Mortal Kombat (the ninth for those who are keeping count), NetherRealm Studio. NetherRealm was formerly known as Midway Games before being bought out by Warner Bros. Studios and renamed in 2010.

I did notice that certain characters are wearing new suits that are reminiscent of their New 52 looks but with a lot of tweaks here and there. Almost every hero looks to be wearing some kind of armor.  I guess it makes sense given the punishment that characters are going to be enduring in this game. In the trailer Superman punches Flash into orbit and then punches him back down to Earth creating shockwaves! The only way the way the Flash is surviving any of that is through some kind of armor.

It also looks like they will be expanding on their previously designed DC characters from MK vs DC as many of the animations in the trailer looked to be almost identical to MK vs. DC. Not that this is a problem or anything; every character’s moveset in MK vs DC for the most part felt true to the character.

I’m not really that into the whole “good guys gone bad” thing but it will be interesting to see what alternate looks they end up using to represent the “Evil” side of our favorite heroes (that is if they end up including alternate looks at all). Plus if it is executed well I’m all for it. I honestly couldn’t care less about the story; I just want to wail on other characters at super speed!

Definitely thrilled to be hearing about all this Flashy video game goodness lately. Don’t forget Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes featuring The Flash and a bunch of other heroes is coming up next month!

Anyone here still play Mortal Kombat vs. DC? Who else is anxiously awaiting the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us? Let us know in the comments below.

Passing despite the awesome speed special effects because…not only am I not a fan of an armored speedster (even in the YJ cartoon), I have three no-no’s when it comes to superhero stories: 1) The hero gets killed. 2) The hero *permanently* loses his power/s, 3) The hero goes nuts and starts wailing on other heroes or innocents or otherwise commits crimes.
I can’t stand those. Would much rather play Legos or read something fun like that preview with Kid Loki at Heathrow International Airport. (Laughter is better than high blood pressure.)

Side note: Tomorrow morning is the Bloodlines Flashes episode on Young Justice! Finally Jay, Barry, and Wally together and hopefully doing something other than eating! Must watch!

I’ll probably wait a bit on this one. Grab it when it’s in the bargin bin. I enjoyed MK vs DC, but I got bored of it quickly.

I just played MK Vs. DCU over the weekend, but that was inspired by the trailer. I think I played it last about three months ago. Still fun and looking forward to this game!
