Warner Brothers Announces Live Action Flashpoint Film

Newsarama reports that there was an announcement of a live action Flashpoint film at the WB SDCC panel today. There are no details as of yet, but it’s a very interesting concept; readers may recall there was an animated film of the story called Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox a few years ago, and of course The Flash TV series recently did a version of it too, so it’s a bit of a surprise to learn it will be told in the DC cinematic universe as well. Thus, it’ll be interesting to see what will be done with it and why the WB movieverse wants to tell that story already. Newsarama speculates it has something to do with the rumours of Ben Affleck leaving the cinematic universe, but that’s all unverified as of now.

Are you excited for the Flashpoint film? What do you hope to see in it? Share your thoughts!

Interesting… what if Affleck is staying on as Bruce Wayne, but they’re looking for someone else to play Thomas Wayne for Flashpoint? That could have sparked the rumors that they want someone else for Batman.

It does seem a bit early to tell Flashpoint in the DCEU, but the characters are well enough known that the impact of an alternate reality might still work. And there are plenty of standalone movies that make AU/time travel-changed versions of characters work. And they could actually include the bigger stakes of the Amazon/Atlantis war, though I think it would turn into something like Captain America: Civil War, where it was pretty much an Avengers movie with Cap in the title.

That’s an interesting idea, and possibly strengthened by the rumour that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be playing Thomas Wayne. I guess the real question is, does Affleck want out, or were the rumours always about WB dumping him?

If the Flash movie is delayed, which it almost certainly will be due to the director/script musical chairs, it’s possible that enough time and movies will have passed to have introduced the Justice League properly before putting them into an AU. I don’t like the idea of the Flash movie being delayed so long, but it seems likely at this point.

    Oh no.
    No, no, no.
Flashpoint has never worked as a concept. The original comic book event was at best mediocre. Then it was used on the TV show and ruined season 3. Flashpoint makes Barry Allen the de facto villain of the story. And now they’re basing the first Flash film on Flashpoint? Give me a break.
Why not use a Flash film to actually introduce the Flash and his mythos? Have him go up against the Rogues or Grodd. There are other Flash stories you can use. Maybe even introduce Jay Garrick and use that as a jumping off point for a JSA film. Just please–PLEASE–stop shoving Flashpoint down our throats. Please!

I’d definitely agree that we should be seeing Professor Zoom before Flashpoint, at the very least. And seeing the Rogues and showing us more about Barry first would sure be great. So I don’t know what WB is thinking, but I’m taking a wait-and-see approach because the Flash movie has already been through so many changes (multiple directors, multiple scripts), and for all we know this too will pass.

I was for sure surprised about the announcement of the Flashpoint angle, because I’d heard recent rumours that the Flash movie would feature the Rogues as an ex-military unit turned criminals. And the widely-reported rumour before that was that the antagonists would be the two Snarts as metahumans. And the word before that was that it’d be a Reverse Flash. So honestly this movie’s been a clusterduck from the beginning and who knows what’s happening. I’m not taking it seriously until it’s actually under production.

I am so sick of this.
It was bad enough that the fight between Superman and Batman in Dawn of Justice was almost word for word the same fight they had in the Dark Knight Returns. But Now we have another re-iteration of a story that’s already been told (in varying forms) three times already! We got the series that was the catalyst for the New52 (FAIL!) we got the animated feature which is slightly more tolerable because it at least keeps Barry and Iris together before and after. we get the Flash seaon 3 opener which has nowhere near the apocalyptic stakes that the Comic/animated versions have. and now we get another retread in the cinematic universe.
    Why?
Because Geoff Johns is the Central Creative director of all things DC and his vision of “Tragedy makes a better hero” is the guiding force behind everything we get from here on out!
I have never bought into that mindset (My head cannon still recognizes the Life story of the Flash by Iris West to be the true origin of the Flash) Everything that happened after Flash Rebirth (not to be confused with DC Universe Rebirth: the Flash) and Flashpoint is a shifted reality waiting to be repaired.
