What is your top priority? For Wally, it seems that everything is his top priority…after all, he’s THE FLASH! But, what does that mean for his son Jai, the one who does NOT have super-speed? Jay has a connection to the Speed Force, but his powers seem to cause him more trouble than anything else. That’s especially true as his powers continue to evolve…and that’s part of the deal in this issue. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Jai is in trouble at school – again, and his powers keep doing strange things. Like making him pop out of school and instantaneously “teleport” to his dad. A mysterious stranger who identifies himself as “Inspector Pilgrim, Science Detective” offers some help, but only in carefully worded responses that don’t reveal more of Jai’s future than is safe.
We do find that Jai can transport himself to any Speed Force user, and he is gaining a bit of additional control, but that doesn’t answer the question of where he stands in Wally’s estimation. We’ll come back to that…
Meanwhile, Wally and Michael Holt (aka Mister Terrific) are trying to understand this very strange phenomenon. It’s not explained by the theory of the Multiverse…while the Multiverse has different worlds held apart by different frequencies, this cosmological thing has dimensions with overlapping frequencies. Each of those realities has it’s own laws of physics, and if this situation cannot be stopped, all the realities will collapse into each other, destroying everything!
They try to measure this thing…with the theory that the phenomenon will disappear if ever measured. But, they don’t get to fully explore that theory. The Stillness arrive to stop the experiment, and then turn their attention (and firepower) on Jai!
This enrages Wally – thinking Jai is dead, Wally is ready to unleash everything he has to destroy the Stillness. The only thing stopping him is a newly revived Jai, who now understands that he truly IS a top priority for his dad.
Jai tells Wally that he doesn’t want to be a super hero…and finds acceptance and love. Wally would have “shattered the world” for Jai…and that’s where we leave it for now.
NOTES:
- Lots of cameos again – Grodd to Bart and most of the rest of the Flash family (including the newest addition to the family).
- This is still a very trippy story arc…but one that seems to be coming together very nicely. We have a ways to go before everything is clear (if indeed that is even the intent). But, the story is more and more entertaining by the issue – and I’m more than ready to see whatever comes next.
- I’ve run out of superlatives for the artwork. Wow!
SUMMARY:
This story arc is adding a lot to the FLASH mythos, with expanded powers and elevated threats all around. I’ll give this issue an 8/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below!
