Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad #4

Comic Vine has DC’s December “Edge” solicitations. including the cover and description for Suicide Squad #4:

The body count rises! Another Squad member falls – but not the way you might expect! Betrayal follows betrayal as Captain Boomerang joins the Squad in a smash-and-grab against the terrorist organization Kobra, and Harley Quinn shows why you should never, ever recruit Squad members from Arkham Asylum. Brace yourself for a last-page shocker the likes of which the Squad has never faced before!

After Crisis on Infinite Earths, most of the Rogues faded from view as DC wanted to establish new villains for Wally West. Captain Boomerang remained visible as a mainstay of the classic Suicide Squad. In fact, it was an issue of this series, not The Flash, that first really fleshed out Boomerang’s origin: Suicide Squad #44 expanded on the connection between “Digger” Harkness and toy manufacturer W.W. Wiggins, revealing him to be not simply a businessman hiring a mascot to promote his product, but a father reaching out to secretly help his long-lost son. I wouldn’t be surprised if that story partially inspired Brad Meltzer’s decision to use Boomerang in Identity Crisis.

Sadly it’s a known fact that the Rogues are being revamped to give them innate powers. I guess they thought his Black Lantern powers are a nice convenient set of powers for him to keep, whether it makes logical sense for him to have them or not.

Pretty sure Superman can fly in the present (the Superman series), but doesn’t yet have his flying ability in the initial storyline of Action Comics, set at set at the beginning of Superman’s career. Flying, like the new costume, is coming to Action Comics.

I’m pretty bummed about this, as I wanted him and all Rogues to stay faaaaar away from this trainwreck. Now I have to buy this series *sigh*

Hardly. You don’t have to buy anything. I’m not buying The Flash on principle no matter how great the artwork is. On the same vein, if Wally returned and they put him in grossly violent stories like the current Green Lantern Corps…yuck…I’d even skip a Wally West book. Would be painful, but yes…definitely would let Wally go if he starred in a slaughterfest.
It all depends on how peeved you are by the changes…how much ‘progress’ you’re willing to swallow.

Obviously I know I’m not obliged to buy it, but haven’t yet hit the point at which I stop completism of Rogues collecting (I freely admit that completism is a disease). I may well hit it, as I’ve slowly wound down my Marvel collecting, but even on that I still buy some of my guys’ appearances and I’m more mad at Marvel than at DC.

Once the reboot’s in full swing and I see just how good or bad it is, I might end up more pissed at DC than Marvel, who knows. We’ll see.

Ostrander’s Suicide Squad was carried by four central characters – Deadshot, Waller, Flag, and Boomer. There were plenty of other characters with shining moments but if you were to take away any of those four from the title, there would be a big hole. Boomer was my favorite (Flash ties aside) because he brought humor to a book that otherwise would have been a “gritty 90’s book” with less pouches. I mention this only because I’m betting that they intend to implement that same formula and will use Boomer to a similar effect. Suicide Squad really fleshed out Boomerang as a character – a distgusting one that I unabashedly cheered for… time will tell if they’re able to strike gold again.

I also loved Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad, and he actually made me follow the title for as long as it was published.
I love it that he will be back at it. Suicide Squade will only gain by his membership. This is just the beguining. I’m eager to know what comes next.
