“Impulse Control Part II” Review of THE FLASH #27

Bart has been acting like…Bart, and that is getting him into a lot of trouble. Wally is chasing after him, and that’s a good thing, because the Dark Legion and another couple of famous speedsters are on the hunt! And they have a particular goal in mind – the total destruction of the Speed Force! This fits in with the whole “DC KO” event, but this story stands very well on its own. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD!

Just a note – the “Silveraged Ed” handle I use is accurate. I started reading stories of The Legion of Superheroes in the 1960s, even a couple of issues BEFORE Jim Shooter took on the writing duties when he was just 14 years old (and I was younger than that). So, any time the Legion appears in a storyline, I’m in. But, this is NOT your grandpa’s Legion. This is a version of Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl that is loyal only to Darkseid, and they are every bit as formidable as any version of the Legion I’ve ever seen.

Worse yet, Max Mercury (or at least the version of him existing in the timeline Bart is visiting) has become corrupted by Darkseid as well. It’s not looking good for Impulse until Wally arrives. Even then, it’s not getting a whole lot better. One more speedster joins the fight alongside the bad guys (think, who is the speedster that’s a Legion member?). And by the time the fight is over, something HAS happened to the speed force! Will Wally and Bart reach [REDACTED] in time? We’ll have to wait for next issue to learn more.

NOTES:

  • Speaking of bringing Silver Age characters back like the Legion, they could not be in any more capable hands than the person who could win any Silver Age trivia contest you can imagine, Mark Waid. He and Christopher Cantwell have brought new life to this series, and I’m enjoying every page and every panel.
  • The artwork continues to be outstanding! I loved how Bart’s imagination was drawn in Chibi art style, which matches the character perfectly. And all the artwork throughout was simply amazing. Thanks to Vasco Georgiev (pencils and inks), Matt Herms (colors) and Buddy Beaudoin (letters).

SUMMARY:

This is another great issue of THE FLASH, and I am SO glad to see this team on the series, for however long it may last. I’ll give this issue a 9/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below!
