Ugh. GL:R Absolute volume? It must be full of extras.
It hardly seems sufficient, let alone worthy.

I think it’s been given the Absolute treatment based on what it did, rather than what it was. Regardless of its merits as a story, it did revive the Green Lantern franchise and set up DC’s most popular event in years.
That’s the closest I have come to explaining it – although I only made the Hal connection, not the full GLC/Blackest Night/Brightest Day part.

From a story perspective GL Rebirth isn’t really on par with say DC New Frontier or Kingdom Come.
But it’s several notches above Hush, Superman For Tomorrow or Danger Girl. All of which received Absolute editions. The selection process for Absolute editions seems to be based on the pedigree of the project, the creators and of course sales potential.
GL Rebirth is basically THE GL story, and beyond that it is really good. It also made GL / Hal a star across the DCU and beyond, which is important from a marketing perspective. The various Rebirth editions have been among DC’s best selling trades several years after its release. Plus, there’s going to be a GL movie next year.
An Absolute edition makes a LOT of sense.
It is hard to argue with any of that… except the part about it being a good story. ;-p
