Impulse Buy: ComiXology’s “Back to School Sale”

Impulse #19

The entire run of Impulse starring speedster Bart Allen is on discount at ComiXology this week for their back to school sale. Most issues are typically $1.99, and are on sale for 99¢.

Technically it’s not the entire run, as they don’t have either of the two Annuals up yet.

There are a few early issues that tie into Flash’s “Dead Heat” storyline and guest-star XS, Bart’s cousin Jenni Ognats from the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Waid/Ramos issues are gold, with #3 possibly being the best of the batch. And while it’s mostly a comedy superhero book, it does delve into deeper emotional stories as well, such as the two-parter where Bart’s friend Carol gets caught in the middle of one of the Trickster’s cons (#14-15), or the issue delving into Max Mercury’s past (#16).

Later on, the series toned down the comedy in favor of more serious superhero stories (Mercury Falling, Dark Tomorrow, etc.), and the last year or so of the book was a constant battle between the creative team and editorial over new powers, crossover tie-ins, and cast changes.

Flash Still From Season Two

The-Flash-812x522

The CW has released the first official still image (click to enlarge) from season two of The Flash, which seems to show Team Flash reacting to something at S.T.A.R. Labs, although we can only guess at what. There are also a few details about how the upcoming season will be different from the first, as noted at TV Insider:

The gang’s all here — or are they? — as The Flash races into Season 2 on the heels of that crazy black hole that threatened to erase Central City. “We pick up about six months later, and we’re going to piece together how the storm has affected everyone,” says Grant Gustin (Barry, center), here facing an uninvited guest with S.T.A.R. Labs buds Joe (Jesse L. Martin), Iris (Candice Patton), Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker), Dr. Stein (Victor Garber) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes). How wild is the world now that Barry has stopped the Reverse-Flash and rewritten history? Says Gustin: “It’s not as different as you’d think, but as we move forward, some things will blow fans’ minds.”

The season premiere is on October 6th. What do you think might be different this season?

Written by Robert Venditti and Van Jensen

Barry Allen is a man divided, forced to either help his father remain on the run from the law, or bring him to justice. As Barry grapples with that impossible choice, The Flash becomes a target of the Folded Man, a mysterious deadly new villain to Central City who’s hell-bent on tearing The Flash apart—literally!

The issue also features a DC Bombshells variant cover by Ant Lucia featuring Killer Frost.

Another Flash Season Two Teaser

The CW has released another eleven-second teaser for season two of The Flash. It’s not particularly spoilery, so you can watch it without concern, and shows some more sneak peeks from the first few episodes!

The premiere is October 6th, which is about six and a half weeks away. Excited yet?

This Week: Flash #194-195

The Flash was weird in 1970. Added to DC’s digital backlist this week (descriptions from ComiXology & Comics.org):

Flash #194: The Bride Cast Two Shadows – “Looking into the eyes of a strange woman gives Flash visions; he assumes another identity, battles demonic creatures, and gets married.” And there’s still room after all that for a backup story, The Man Who Televised Time!

Flash #195: Fugitive From Blind Justice – “Flash is ambushed by a group of crooks from his past but is saved by a mystery dog. Flash saves Lightning from being put to sleep after Lighting is accused of killing his master.” I Open My Mouth…But I Can’t Scream! – “Flash must overcome his fear of roller coasters.”
