“The Darkness at the End Part 1” – Review of ABSOLUTE FLASH #20

Wally, Linda, and Grodd have been taken to the subatomic world by the Absolute Ray Palmer. And that was just in time as Hunter Zolomon was about to end Wally for good. In the world they just left behind, the illusions of Absolute Abra Kadabra are gone, but the effects linger. There is a lot going on in the regular world and in this beyond-microscopic universe our heroes have been taken into – wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!

This issue gives us a great look at the HQ and the personality of Absolute Ray Palmer. His subatomic ship is called the Atom (he doesn’t seem to take the code name for himself, but correct me if I’m wrong here). Also correct me if I’m wrong on this, but it appears Jean is his AI in this universe.

Palmer’s research has led him to unbelievable discoveries, and he may have just found the source of everything…a dark barrier that he cannot seem to penetrate, one that he calls “the Omega”. (And yes, we can guess what THAT’S about).

Palmer and Wally agree to work together, though with some reluctance on Wally’s part. That will have to wait for Wally to heal, though. He took a huge beating from Zolomon and it is taking a little time for even his speed-healing to finish the work.

Back in the regular world, Thawne and company have decided how to handle the backlash from their failed efforts. Just blame Wally, Linda and Grodd for everything! They aren’t around to defend themselves, so blame them and arrest anyone connected to them (like Ralph Dibny?)

This issue winds toward discoveries in the subatomic world, including a part of the ship that no one should visit. (Why is it true in almost every story ever that someone HAS to go to the place that “no one should visit?”) Linda and Grodd discover yet another character that I’ll leave unnamed here…but it’s good, and I can’t wait to see what they do next!

SUMMARY:

I may have said this before, but it’s still true. Jeff Lemire is having entirely too much fun with this series, and we are all better off because of it. Lemire is taking full advantage of the freedom found in a new universe and is writing one of the most entertaining series on the LCS shelves today. The artwork continues to amaze as well. I LOVE the design for Ray Palmer and can’t wait to see what the character we see at the end of the issue becomes! I’ll give this a 9/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think?
