“The Speed Was Power and the Speed Was Joy Part VIII” Review of THE FLASH #38

Wally’s “Flashes of Insight” were working great. That is, they were working great until they failed miserably. Last issue, Wally thought he stopped three bridges from blowing up, but his “Flashes of Insight” didn’t stop that from happening. Explosions in Central City, Star City, and Metropolis! Add to that the fact that innocent people are in jail for a crime Wally only thought they were about to commit. There are members of the Justice League that are watching, and they are definitely NOT happy. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Wally saved everyone he could in Central City (clearly implying that he could not save everyone), then went to Metropolis and Star City to aid in recovery efforts there. Jon Kent is not super-happy (see what I did there?), but takes the help in saving as many as they can. Wally goes to Star City…

And Oliver Queen is more than angry. He’s done.

Cue a meeting in the Arrow Cave. Enter Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Jon Kent, and Red Tornado. Oliver has a plan to take away Wally’s powers – a “gizmo” similar to the one that took Barry’s speed away. The others do NOT like the idea, Aquaman even saying, “This is something Batman would do.”

While that debate is going on, Wally is stopping the Trickster when his “Flashes of Insight” clued him in on what’s happening in the Arrow Cave.

Wally defends himself, and it’s almost tragic how he pleads his case. But, Red Tornado reveals a twist – something that the Speed Force is doing to Wally (you’ll have to read the issue to learn about that).

That leads to a splash page confrontation that can only be resolved next issue – although if you’ve been reading all the press releases we can guess what happens next.

SUMMARY:

We have a power for Wally that has turned out to be anything but a good thing. It helped Wally make some amazing saves at first. But, it quickly went to terrible choices, and something even worse in this issue. Still, I felt bad for Wally while he pleaded his case, even though he was in wrong. There are SO many layers to the implications of “Flashes of Insight”, and I’m enjoying every issue in this arc. I’ll give this issue an 8/10. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think?
