Grant Gustin, cast as Barry Allen on “Arrow” and positioned for a possible Flash spin-off, spoke with E Online last Friday about running, the iconic costume (yes, we will see it, but not in the first two episodes which take place before he becomes the Flash), and researching the character by reading Geoff Johns’ comics.
Thanks to The Dude for the link.
Except there’s not a lot of Johns’ Barry to work from. I’d feel better if he was basing his impressions off the current team’s run.
I agree. He should use New 52 Barry Allen as reference, instead of “Brightest Day” Barry Allen. I also believe Buccellato and Manapul should be consultants.
Geoff John’s Barry Allen for reference?
Oh man, triple not interested.
I didn’t like rebirth or anything after it.
Didn’t like Johns and Barry together
To me, the best thing about Johns’ post-Rebirth stuff was reaffirming what a psychotic bad@$$ villain Zoom was, & the Manapul/Buccellato art. Oh, & I did think the Renegades were kinda cool, at first anyway. Everything else was pretty…meh. I always say Barry’s TRUE Rebirth came with the New 52- I see Johns’ stuff as a transitionary period that culminated in little to the book at the time, but paved the way for Manapul & Buccellato to tell some awesome stories- & that was a good outcome for Flash fans who trudged through the Rebirth & post-Rebirth stuff.
They should use New 52 Barry as a basis.
Totally. New 52 has done some awesome stuff for the flash.
The one thing that sucks about this being tv rather than film is that I doubt we will ever see anything as awesome as him phasing a plane through a bridge (a ridiculously awesome feat)
Heck yeah! I was reading that issue for the umpteenth last night, & I’m always amazed at how awesome it is. That’s what Flash should always do- astonishing feats using his super-speed that bend the laws of Newtonian physics & leave readers in awe. I hope we see Barry do amazing things like that in the new show, & show him testing his powers scientifically to perform new feats, like his absolute molecular control & his ability to phase into time & other dimensions, or even the “mental Speed Force”. The Flash is a character whose abilities should always “wow” his audience & bring something new- something Manapul & Buccellato, & creators in the Silver Age, always delivered on.
That’s why I wish he got an animated show over live action.
An animated series woulda been awesome! I always thought Flash, either Barry or Wally, was perfect for an animated series. I loved the Batman Brave & the Bold episode that had Barry, Wally & Jay in it, that had Barry having an awesome fight against Reverse-Flash. That was an awesome episode! And the JLU episode “Flash & Substance”. To me those are good examples to illustrate that the Flash could carry his own animated series.
Flash and substance really shows how endearing a flash anything could be. It perfectly encapsulated what the flash is about and what sets him apart from other heroes
Darwyn Cooke’s New Frontier for reference for Barry too.
I agree. And I suggest also Mark Waid’s “The Brave and the Bold” and “Justice League: Year One”.
I agree- Waid did an awesome Barry in both of those, & everyone knows his phenomenal handling of Wally. I also love how he handled Aquaman in JL Year One, showed what a bad@$$ he could be. I would honestly love to see how Waid would handle Barry in the present.
