Jesse Quick Anime-Inspired Statue

Among DC’s September solicitations are announcements of upcoming action figures and collectibles, including a Jesse Quick statue.

Well, sort of.

AME-COMI HEROINE SERIES: JESSE QUICK AS THE FLASH PVC FIGURE

Sculpted by Jack Mathews

Faster Than Lightning!

Super-speedster and member of the Flash family of zoomers, Jesse Quick invokes the mysterious 3×2(9y2)4A formula, tapping into the power of the Speed Force.

Fleet of foot, Jesse sizzles with swiftness!

Packaged in a 4-color window box with J-hook, this non-articulated PVC statue stands approximately 9” high and includes a display base.

On sale February 9, 2011 * Statue * $70 US

Thoughts: This is part of a series of statuettes that have taken DC heroines and redesigned them with looks inspired by anime. This one’s a bit odd, as is another one announced today (Duela Dent as the Joker) in that they’re double mash-ups. Instead of just anime-inspired Jesse Quick, it’s anime-inspired Jesse Quick as the Flash.

OK, the Flash has the name recognition. And while they could have just given us a female Flash, it’s nice that they actually used one of DC’s few female speedsters (most of them are alternate-reality, past or future characters). And, let’s face it, Jesse Quick doesn’t exactly have an iconic look to start from. She’s gone through at least half a dozen costumes since her first appearance.

Side Note: Speaking of Jesse Quick and anime, about ten years ago I watched a science-fiction sports epic called Battle Athletes Victory. There’s an athlete named Jessie with long blonde hair whose last name I could never remember, so I always thought of her as Jesse Quick!

Maybe this was inspired by Terminal Velocity, when Wally was gonna pass the mantle on the her to make Bart mature faster through jealousy?

I had no idea the AME-COMI things were that expensive. I have a friend that is crazy about them, no wonder she doesn’t have that many.

I’ve been waiting for a while for them to release a Flash version of one of these. Very happy to see Jesse Quick though. Even though they’ve stripped her of her entire identity as a character. I mean iconic or not, the “Quickstart” logo and the original Johnny Quick logo were incorporated into a number of her Jesse Quick costumes and I thought of it as pretty distinctive and about 20 times better than anything they’ve had her wear as of late.

I loved the rapid costume changes with Jesse Quick. It seemed like a logical extension of who she was at the time, a CEO of QuickStart Enterprises who basically used Jesse Quick in her double identity as the companies unofficial superhero. So it was like a brand. Some brands like Superman, The Flash, Batman are like Coca-Cola or McDonalds. They might change temporarily or have a brief shake up but eventually they go back to being what they originally were. The classic brand. Then you have brands like Jesse Quick where they are constantly striving to be eye popping and appeal to a demographic, kind of like let’s say Mountain Dew. Different crazy flavors, new slogans, logos etc all the time, all trying to reach that golden demographic. And it works.

I’m happy that this one doesn’t feature two other very expensive variants to go along with it, but I wish it would have a little more of a Jesse Quick quality to it. The solicit doesn’t even mention anything about Johnny Quick or Liberty Belle. Or the “mysterious formula” having been used by her father first. Or the fact that she is a legacy character, which I think is important. This looks like a failed design for Kid Flash II from The Kingdom not Jesse Quick.

Of course I’m going to end up buying it though. Nice write up Kelson.
