“The Gift” – Review of THE FLASH #6

This wild, weird ride through different layers of reality continues…with a twist that I certainly did NOT see coming (how about you?). If you think Wally West has gone through the wringer so far, hold onto your hats (or cowls) because we’re dialing things up to 11 in this issue. Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

There is SO much to tell…but there is also a lot I don’t want to spoil. The big bad is revealed – but you will have plenty of opportunities to hit the back button before we get to that one, so let’s go with a brief (less spoilery) review:

  • Everyone – and I mean EVERYONE is off their game in this issue. Even when they know what to do, it seems beyond their reach to do that. This includes Wally and Linda – and Barry as well!
  • Barry is particularly off – acting most un-Barry-like. He’s throwing shade at Wally in a way that is deeply concerning and hurtful.
  • The Stillness are continuing to make appearances, but their conversations are not helpful in the least. They remain enigmatic – who/what are they, what is their purpose, why are they here?
  • In the end, Barry and Wally race into the speed force. Wally pours out his heart, only to see Barry acting nastier (and more out of character) than ever. It culminates in an act that no one would ever THINK Barry could do…

And after that we find who has really been behind this all along…

SPOILER AHEAD

……

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

…..

You really wanna know?

…..

OK, here it is….

….

Last chance…

…..

THAWNE IS BACK!

Yes, Eobard Thawne has once again escaped certain doom and appears more powerful than ever. And, his plan is to use a confused and hurt Wally West as his ultimate weapon!  More on that next issue…but for now…

NOTES:

  • OK, dear reader,  you may have figured out Thawne ahead of time…I certainly did not. Still, this version of Thawne may be the most dangerous yet. Well done, Si Spurrier, getting us here in this arc.
  • The artwork continues to be outstanding! It’s trippy, which fits the atmosphere of the story – but that description does not do the artwork justice. It’s exceptionally well done. Thanks to Mike Deodato, Jr., Trish Mulvihill, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

SUMMARY:

The reveal at the end alone is worth a high ranking – overall I’ll give this issue a 9 out of 10. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below.!
