Is Ronnie Raymond in that black flame? Is he somehow responsible for all the recent deaths? And, is there any way to save him? Those are the big questions – and this episode answers them all! SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
There are a series of flashbacks during this episode that takes us to pre-Season 1, when Caitlin and Ronnie first met. We see their relationship develop and grow, all the way to their engagement when they proposed to each other at the same time. And, we go back to when Ronnie was lost in that singularity a long time ago. Is this really him? Hearing Ronnie’s voice in the cold fusion flames has Caitlin looking for any way to bring him back. And, there is a way.
That same quantum splicer that helped him as Firestorm could possibly bring him back. But, is that the right thing to do? That debate takes up a lot of the episode. In the end, there are two competing plans.
Barry and most of Team Flash believe Ronnie needs to be freed, to allow him to pass on. That’s what Cecile is sensing in the flames. To do that, they need the cold fusion sphere, and it would work. The other plan belongs to Caitlin and Frost – use the quantum splicer and effectively resurrect Ronnie.
In the end, Barry almost has the flame contained when Frost and Caitlin stop him. The splicer works, or at least it seems to work as Ronnie is back. Everyone is apologizing to Caitlin for doubting her, but of course this isn’t the end of the story.
When only Caitlin is left at S.T.A.R. with Ronnie, the lights start going out. Ronnie is no longer there…until Caitlin sees him in the lounge. As it turns out…
This.Isn’t.Ronnie.
Ronnie died in that singularity years ago – and through his dying this new creature was born. His name? Deathstorm!
NOTES:
- In the other major story thread, we picked up just after Iris’ time sickness took Tinya’s mother away. Sue tries to help Iris, but eventually Tinya comes back for revenge. Tinya uses her powers to make Iris disappear! What happened to her is something we will have to find out in future episodes, but this is a big twist for the show.
- I think a lot of us have been waiting for Deathstorm since the black flames appeared. Still, this was done exceptionally well. The episode almost went overboard with the sappy apologies after “Ronnie” was saved, but it was a good setup for what came afterward with the big reveal.
SUMMARY:
This was a solid episode, with Danielle Panabaker especially good playing Younger Caitlin, Present-day Caitlin and Frost. I’ll give this episode a 9/10. Of course, that’s just my opinion. What to YOU think? Leave your comments below!
