Flash Comics for January 2009

Actually, there aren’t any Flash comics for January 2009, since the current series ends with #247 and Flash: Rebirth isn’t starting until March. But DC’s January Solicitations do list team books and events which will probably feature one Flash or another, and include the official announcement of The Flash Archives Vol.5, to be released in March 2009. Plus there are several collections that include Flash stories, and even an appearance by Impulse!

Final Crisis #7

Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy
Covers by J.G. Jones and Doug Mahnke

The dramatic finale to the epic, seven-part saga of the DC multiverse concludes with an apocalyptic battle for the soul of humanity that must be seen to be believed! Can the heroes of 52 Earths save the multiverse? And is the only way to save it, to change it forever?

On sale January 28 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US

Notes: Please tell me they aren’t going to do yet another continuity reset. Unless it involves opening up the 52-multiverse to something a bit more flexible.

Tangent Comics: Superman’s Reign #11 of 12

Written by Dan Jurgens and Ron Marz
Art by Carlos Magno & Julio Ferreira and Andie Tong & Mark McKenna
Cover by Ivan Reis & Joe Prado

In this penultimate issue, the Justice League of America is defeated as Tangent Superman has conquered the DC Universe by setting the Ultra-Humanite loose on the populace. Is anyone left to challenge the Tangent Man of Telekinesis? Or has the mad dictator truly won?

On sale January 21 • 11 of 12, 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Notes: Way to spoil things, DC! (Yeah, for me and the two other people who are reading this.) But props for using “penultimate” correctly.

The sorcerer Felix Faust has imprisoned the soul of Isis, Black Adam’s deceased wife. But the Black Marvel just figured that out, and nothing will save Faust from his wrath — nothing except maybe the Justice Society of America. Advance-solicited; on sale March 25 • 168 pg, FC, $24.99 US

Notes: This includes the Jay Garrick/Batman team-up against the Samuroids from The Brave and the Bold #13. Interesting choices for the additional stories. Flash #107 was an “Underworld Unleashed” tie-in that had Wally West teaming up with Captain Marvel against the Shadow Thief. Impulse #17 was a fun team-up with Zatanna.

The Flash Archives Vol.5

Written by John Broome and Gardner Fox
Art by Carmine Infantino, Joe Giella and Murphy Anderson
Cover by Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella

The Fastest Man Alive takes on some of his greatest foes in this new Archive, including Captain Cold, Abra-Kadabra, Mirror Master, Pied Piper, Heat Wave and The Reverse Flash! Collecting THE FLASH #133-#141 from 1962-1963.
Advance-solicited; on sale March 18 • 248 pg, FC, $49.99 US.

Notes: And now we know for sure what’s included. It’s exactly what Keith Dallas predicted, plus one more issue — which features the first appearance of the Rogues’ tailor, Paul Gambi. Also: Amazon only wants $31.50 for pre-orders.

Justice League International Vol.4 (HC)

Advance-solicited; on sale March 4 • 208 pg, FC, $24.99 US

Notes: The cover comes from an issue that set up Justice League International spinning off into Justice League America and Justice League Europe. Wally West made an appearance here before joining the JLE — the start of his long membership in the Justice League.

Tangent: Superman’s Reign Vol.1 (TP)

Written by Dan Jurgens, Ron Marz and Dwayne McDuffie
Art by Jamal Igle, Fernando Pasarin, Matthew Clark, Joe Benitez, Robin Riggs, Jesse Delperdang and Victor Llamas
Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund

The Tangent Earth and our DC Universe collide in this collection of Tangent: Superman’s Reign #1-6 and Justice League of America #16.

Advance-solicited; on sale February 4 • 160 pg, FC, $19.99 US

Notes: JLA #16 was the issue in which the Tangent Atom showed up and got into a mix-up with the Justice League. The Tangent Flash made the cover, but only showed up on one page at the very end of the story. The whole thing was essentially a promo for Superman’s Reign.

No, I don’t think a reboot is going to happen.

NRAMA: What exactly does Final Crisis represent, in terms of how it’s going to be moving the DC Universe forward?

GM: …a lot of people are speculating it’s going to be a big continuity reboot, but I don’t think we need any of that stuff. … There may be some things that come out of it that change the universe, but it’s not a reboot and it’s not about fixing continuity gaffes. It’s a story about characters.

Also, I so want that neon sign.
