“Job Hunt” Review of Issue 772 of THE FLASH

Wally is back! Those of you who read the FLASH ANNUAL 2021 (and you really should have) know that the redemption story for Wally West is complete. He has been restored to the DCU and to his family, in the familiar scarlet uniform with the white eye-holes. FINALLY, Wally gets to live as close to a normal life as any super-hero gets. So…after paying such a big price to get home, Wally now has to pay the bills! Yes, it’s time for a “Job Hunt”! Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!

Much of this issue follows two story threads. One is Wally’s somewhat hilarious search for a new job. “Why is there a gap in my resume? That’s a good question that I…have…a…plausible answer for”. Okay, that is the ONLY time I’ve laughed at what’s happened to Wally since the New 52 started. Dark humor for the win!

Wally eventually gets a job at, what else, a “Speed Lube” (such a play on words). Of course, the Fastest Man Alive may be the Slowest Man At Work, and this really isn’t what he should be doing. Thank goodness he finally meets the owner…

Michael Holt, Mr. Terrific!

Michael sets him up with a job at TerrificTech, and even provides a secret entrance to use when he needs to switch into The Flash. And that’s a good thing, because we’re about to catch up to that other story thread…

That thread is about Mick Rory. He’s dying.

Mick Rory has cancer, and he doesn’t have a lot of time left. So, what’s a Rogue to do? Put on the Heat Wave gear and set a huge fire downtown. Flash saves everyone from the fire, then realizes someone is still in the building. That someone, of course, is Heat Wave, who gets the better of Wally for the moment. That’s where we leave this issue.

NOTES:

  • It is SO refreshing to have a story about Wally West where the weight of the world (universe/omniverse) is not on his shoulders. THIS is the Wally West fans remember, and putting him back with Linda and the kids is a sight for sore eyes.
  • The script is fantastic! Jeremy Adams has Wally West’s voice down perfectly – and that’s a Flash Fact!
  • The artwork is amazing! Kudos to Will Conrad (pencils and inks), Alex Sinclair (colors), and Steve Wands (letters).
  • We have a one-page interlude that contains something we will see again before long. Watch this space.

SUMMARY:

This is a perfect jumping on point for any Flash fan, especially those who grew up with the DCAU where Wally was THE Flash. While the job search was hilarious, it was important to re-establish the Wally West that we all knew before his life was messed up so badly by the New 52 and what came afterward. I truly enjoyed this issue. It’s a 10/10 for me – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below!
