“The Coming Dread” Review of JAY GARRICK: THE FLASH #2

I keep saying this – I’m a big fan of Jay Garrick and have been for decades. Getting to see him as the lead in his own series for the first time since 1949 is a special treat. This series gives us a new speedster in Judy Garrick, but still maintains that classic Flash vibe that long-time fans still love and appreciate. Throw in a HUGE mystery that may have implications for all of the DCU and you’ve got a great story! Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

The villain of the moment is called Ro-Bear…and while that’s more than a bit fanciful, this bad guy still comes across as a powerful opponent for Jay and Judy. Only, Jay has seen him before – too bad he can’t recall the meeting.

Back in the heyday of the JSA, Jay helped to stop Ro-Bear only to see him disappear in the same manner as Judy did. That means Ro-Bear escaped everyone’s memory until he reappeared in today’s world. That takes us to a visit to the mall by Judy and Courtney Whitmore, aka Stargirl…and a big interruption by Ro-Bear, apparently on a mission to capture Judy!

The combined forces of Jay, Judy and Courtney stop Ro-Bear…but there is a LOT more to the mystery than just this one baddie. Who is Doctor Elemental? Why are so many things wiped out of everyone’s memory? And, what is going to happen next? That’s for next issue and beyond…but for now let’s go to…

NOTES:

  • I love the artwork for this series – from actions to emotions and everything in between, this art time is spot-on.
  • The script handles all the difficult family dynamics perfectly. Here we have an elderly couple finding a teenage daughter who hasn’t aged a day…and who now has to navigate a world very different from the one she new before. All the interactions seem genuine, and it makes this story draw the reader in even more.

SUMMARY:

This is already a fantastic series – can’t wait for the next issue! I’ll give this one a 10/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below!
