Joshua Williamson continues to do the near-impossible – giving loving nods to the rich history of the Flash while adding truly fresh twists to the stories of the REBIRTH era. While the Reverse Flash has been one of the Flash’s toughest foes from his first Silver Age appearance, we’ve seen multiple variations on his origin story, ranging from his starting out as a criminal in the future (with Barry stopping him during a trip to the 25th century), to Thawne being the descendant of a long-lost twin, to Thawne’s travel to the past to meet Wally as “Barry Allen”…you get the idea. FLASHPOINT didn’t help that matter, with Thawne’s apparent death and later reappearance in the DCU. Now, in an “Extra-Sized Anniversary Issue” celebrating the latest volume of THE FLASH hitting issue #25, we get the REBIRTH origin…one that ties together many elements of previous origin stories while giving us a fresh twist. This is a perfect jumping-on place for those who have missed out so far (and if you have missed out…wow, you have really been missing out on a great series). We see the aftermath of the crossover with the Teen Titans and Deathstroke, and set the stage for a very big event for our favorite heroes. Okay, I’m in for this one. The “Color of Fear” story arc ramps up considerably in the second installment, with some huge implications for the Flash family (and some nods to the past as well). This season of THE FLASH has had a lot of twists and turns – let’s just do a quick review. We began with FLASHPOINT, then moved to Doctor Alchemy, Savitar, Kid Flash, Killer Frost, Gypsy, HR Wells from Earth 19…and moved all the way up to last episode’s tragic ending.
