Quick Link: EVS on Flash: Rebirth

Newsarama spoke with Ethan Van Sciver at Mid-Ohio Con this weekend, and he talked about Flash: Rebirth. Some highlights:

But this is not just about Barry Allen’s return; this is about the Flash’s rebirth. This is the entire Flash legacy, all of the friends and neighbors, and bringing them all back and giving them a purpose and a new sort of lease on life. So even though Barry Allen has already appeared in Final Crisis, and was brought back in Final Crisis, which saved us a little bit of work, you’ll still see many long-lost friends. And you’ll be happy to see them again — some for the first time in ages.

And on Wally’s new costume:

He will have a very interesting and exciting new costume that will establish his own unique identity in the Flash Universe. When you see it, it will be instantly familiar. Nobody’s going to freak out. It’s not suddenly blue. He’s not reverting to the costume he wore as an infant, or as Kid Flash. It’s just a handy new look that fits right in, just like everything I’ve done. I just try to keep everything so that it looks like I didn’t create it. It was already there.

This is big news. I’m worried about the new costume, but I’m glad it’s not going to be one that we’ve already seen. I am dying to see this!

Now that I think of it, you know who we really haven’t seen in a long time?

The man behind Barry’s true origin….

    The one, the only…

    Mopee.

And with Geoff “connect all elements of a character’s history into one coherent backstory” Johns writing, we’ll probably learn that the Mopee story really did happen, only Mopee wasn’t a Heavenly Helpmate, but a manifestation of the Speed Force.

You heard it here first, folks! 😀

    I FREAKIN’ KNEW IT!!!!!!

dude…i’ve thought it through ever since EVS said the whole “different costume” thing:

Wally’s gonna have his “Dark Flash” costume…

(despite the fact that his Kid Flash costume roks. that one and any of John Fox’s outfits…and Jay’s costume. and Impulse’s. i’m a Flash fan. sue me.)

I think this is good. Barry will be THE Flash, and Jay Garrick and Wally will be recognisable, well known members of the Flash universe but with their own costumes, stories and identity.

And yes, using the dark flash costume from a few years ago would fit as that was Wally from the future.

I loved the Dark Flash costume.

The only problem is that the way Wally reacted to Walter means he’s extremely unlikely to want to wear it unless in response to some tragedy (like losing Linda and/or the kids).

Incidentally, Walter West wasn’t from the future. He was from a parallel universe, and he looked older because he accelerated his metabolism in order to survive a lethal attack from Abra Kadabra.

    Err…

Could be a modified Johnny Quick costume as well as the “Dark Flash” outfit. Wally West is the only person of a half-dozen or known people whom the Quick formula has worked for.

With his recent “power outages” and the seeming disappearance of his permanent link to the Speed Force, he might be needing that formula.

I dunno. The cryptic comments have me stumped.

If there some way to update the Kid Flash outfit Wally wore in New Teen Titans, I’d be for that.

I thought it was very clear he’s NOT going to be called “Flash”-anything.

On that last point, EVS apparently said at some convention that yes, Wally is still going to be a Flash. Someone posted it to (IIRC) the DC boards a few weeks ago.

    OK, if that’s the case….

Could Wally’s new outfit possibly be a reverse version of the Kid Flash outfit?

EVS’ continuing comments (always meant to stir the pot!) make me think this is a distinct possibility.

If you want to see what I mean look at still frames from the Filmation late’60s DC Superheroes show. The Flash segments had a few segments where Wally and Barry teamed up.

Here’s a link to an animation cel from that series: http://www.premiereprops.com/images/images_big/product_cel5027.jpg

For whatever reasons, they screwed up the coloring on the show and REVERSED the colors on Wally’s outfit. Wally also had dark hair in the animation.

Most people agree that the Kid Flash outfit was a great costume. A reversed-coloring, suitably modernized version of this costume would NOT be a bad one for Wally to wear as the third Flash. It gives him back a piece of his heritage and allows him to move on from Barry, too.

OR better YET ThEy could BRING BART ALLEN BACK FROM THE DEAD AND HAVE HIM WEAR THE MAIN FLASH COSTUME WHILE THE OTHERS ADOUPT DIFFRENET COSTUMES.BARRY COULD WEAR A SILVER AGE TYPE COSTUME IE.SMALL DOMINO MASK MORE BASIC LIGHTING BOLT.WHILE WALLYS COSTUME COULD LEAVE HIS HAIR EXPOSED AN HAVE GOOGLES.

Besides the Dark Flash costume, I really liked the John Fox “high tech” blue/red costume and Wally’s pure Speed Force costume. Maybe a combination of the two would look cool.

I think Barry should also use Wally’s version of his costume (I think it looks better) or a slightly updated version of his own. I just know someone will eventually accidentally draw Barry with Wally’s costume anyways. They might as well do it officially.
