Cover: Heat Wave in Flashpoint: Legion of Doom

Heat Wave may have been missing from the Citizen Cold cover, but the Rogue is not missing from Flashpoint. In an interesting counterpoint, both of them are facing a group of hands at the bottom of the cover. Heat Wave seems to have dealt with them a bit differently…

DC announced this title today as part of their gigantic Flashpoint Friday. It’s not clear yet whether this is the 15th miniseries or one of the one-shots (since they also announced Flashpoint: Hal Jordan), or whether DC replaced one of the previously-announced miniseries.

Flashpoint: Citizen Cold vs. the Rogues

The just-released-today cover for Flashpoint: Citizen Cold features Central City’s new hero facing off against a group of gloved hands and weapons representing the Rogues. Long-time (and even short-time) Flash readers should recognize most of them.

From left to right:

  • Weather Wizard, one of the classic Rogues Gallery.
  • Tar Pit, introduced during Geoff Johns’ first run on The Flash. A small-time criminal who could project his mind into inanimate objects, then got stuck in a lump of tar.
  • Fallout, also introduced during Geoff Johns’ first run. A tragic story of a man who was turned radioactive in a nuclear accident, and locked up because the radiation killed his family. Iron Heights actually hooked him up to the prison’s power grid.
  • The Trickster. It could be either the classic one (I really miss James Jesse) or the new one, but given that Scott Kolins co-created the new one, I’m guessing it’s Axel.
  • Mirror Master. Another classic Rogue, and another case where it could be either the original or the second criminal to use the name and costume. This one’s a tougher call.

In the main timeline, Geoff Johns has thoroughly established Captain Cold as the leader of the Rogues. It’ll be interesting to see how this dynamic changes in the altered timeline with Citizen Cold as their enemy.

New Flashpoint Creative Teams & Covers Announced (UPDATED)

DC is announcing the creative teams and first covers for eight of the fifteen Flashpoint miniseries today. Each announcement comes along with yet another teaser.

DC seems to be announcing them alphabetically, but I’m moving the Flash-related ones up to the top because, well, this is a Flash site! So far we’ve got Citizen Cold, Batman: Knight of Vengeance, Deathstroke and the Curse of the Ravager, Deadman and the Flying Graysons, Hal Jordan (a new one), World of Flashpoint, Emperor Aquaman, and finally…Legion of Doom.

“He loves someone he shouldn’t.”

I was fully expecting Scott Kolins as the artist on this book — his style is perfect for the modern take on the Rogues. But I wasn’t expecting a one-man show. I really figured Geoff Johns would want to write the Captain Cold mini himself.

Going by the weapons and gloves, those hands look like the Weather Wizard, Tar Pit, Fallout, the Trickster and the Mirror Master…opposed to Captain Citizen Cold. Update: I have some more commentary on this one.

You know, I thought it was odd that Heat Wave wasn’t on that Citizen Cold cover…

Also, this makes one more book that I’m going to have to check out. Not because of Super Friends nostalgia, but because of Heat Wave.

Two recent interviews with Flash artists:

The Source posted a Q&A with Andy Kubert focusing on his work on Flashpoint. He doesn’t reveal anything about the story, but talks about the process of working with Geoff Johns, redesigning characters, and being sworn to secrecy on a project that everyone knows he’s working on.

Ain’t It Cool News’ Johnny Destructo interviewed Francis Manapul. He talks about how he got into comics, how he ended up working on Adventure Comics and The Flash (interestingly, it seems that someone else was going to draw The Flash, but backed out), his art process, pacing, Central City, and de-aging Iris.

Flashpoint Thursday: Creative Team Follow-Up

Bleeding Cool doesn’t list their source*, but they’re reporting the same creative teams that leaked a few weeks ago for the “Whatever Happened to Europe?” group of Flashpoint miniseries. If these come from an independent source, that lends more credence to the initial leak.

We’re keeping track of all the Flashpoint Creative Teams as they’re leaked or announced. Keep an eye on Speed Force and a bookmark on that link for updates!

*Understandable, since they usually report on items that are unofficial, not yet announced, etc., and want to protect their sources, but in this case, it leaves open the question of whether they got the info from industry sources or from the dozens of places that reported on the initial leak back in January. If the former, then it lends support to the information. If the latter, it doesn’t really tell us anything new.

Flashpoint: Questions and Answers

Over at The Source, Geoff Johns answers three questions about Flashpoint. Key items: “Flash will learn what the universe would be like if the world’s greatest super-heroes never became the world’s greatest super-heroes.” “You won’t just see the DC Universe shaken up, you’ll see characters you’ve never met who’ve come into existence because of the historical damage done to the past,” such as Element Woman [different from Element Girl?], Blackout, the Outsider [presumably not the Silver Age Batman villain, then], and the Resistance. [Interesting that “The Resistance” is a character, not an organization.] S!H!A!Z!A!M!

Most importantly: You don’t need to have read any specific stories to understand Flashpoint. “The Flash series and The Flash: Rebirth give you the foundation for Barry today, but even then Flashpoint will tell you everything you need to know.” Familiarity with the normal DC Universe may help you appreciate the differences more, but “You’ll meet the world and characters as you enter the story.”
