Francis Manapul Twitter Q&A

Wednesday, on discovering that his flight home from San Diego offered free Wifi, incoming Flash writer/current artist Francis Manapul decided to answer reader questions on Twitter. I’m sure I’ve missed some, but here you go.

I’ve reformatted these for easier reading. In many cases, the question and answer appeared in the same post, as a retweet with a comment (ex: “Answer. RT @asker question”), so they’re really terse. Continue reading

Opinion: Saying “Goodbye” to The Flash Story?

The new Flash Story begins in September.  This time around, there is no speculation about the focus of the book, or who will be behind the mask.  It looks like Flash’s new launch will take off without baggage – an all-new Flash for the all-new DC.

Well, sort of.

In the cases of Batman and Green Lantern, it has been announced that the stories and key elements will (more or less) continue.  In the cases of Superman and most other properties, the stories are looking more and more like a fresh and somewhat rootsy start.  For Flash, it appears the new series will be a pretty hard reset.

Francis Manapul’s Process Reveals New Flash Logo

Francis Manapul has been posting his art process for The Flash #2 on his Tumblr blog, starting with layouts, moving to the finished drawing, to the finished cover…which you may notice includes the logo!

Here is the finished cover to The Flash #2. I colored the cover in Photoshop. I color my cover on occasion when there is a very specific look I’m going for. This was also the first time I got to play around with the title logo. I wanted to run the electricity on it to make it look like it’s part of the art. Had a lot of fun on this cover.

I’m not sure why, but it makes me think of the Tangent Comics Flash logo…even though it doesn’t look remotely like it. If anything, it’s slightly reminiscent of the design used for All-Star Superman and All-Star Batman & Robin, but even then, only barely. Check out my run-down of the Flash logos throughout the years. It looks like I’m going to be updating it again soon…

The Fastest Man Alive learns he can make his brain function even faster than before – but as much as it helps him, it also comes with a steep price. Plus: The mystery behind Barry Allen’s friend Manuel Lago deepens as Barry investigates his kidnapping at the hands of Mob Rule!

The Flash vs. Mob Rule

The Source asks Francis Manapul a few questions about his upcoming Flash series, and he lets a few more details spill…including a bit about the villain in the first story: a group called Mob Rule.

My favorite bit: when he says the biggest surprise working on the book was “The potential with experimentation of visual storytelling.”
