UPDATED: Full View of Grant Gustin in the FLASH SUIT

The Flash: Grant Gustin In the Suit

DC has released the first full image of Grant Gustin in the Flash suit. (We got to see a preview of just the mask two weeks ago.)

First thoughts:

  • Wow!
  • It does look a little dark, but again that’s partly backlighting.
  • The earpieces are raised ever so slightly. It’ll take a bit of getting used to, but I think it works.
  • While I prefer the white circle around the chest symbol, I think the brighter red on a darker red background works better for the universe established by Arrow.
  • I wonder what the belt looks like.

The pilot episode is currently filming.

The Flash’s costume was designed by three-time Oscar® winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costume for Arrow and whose motion picture credits include Academy Awards® for her work on Alice in Wonderland, Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago, as well as seven additional Oscar® nominations for films such as Snow White and the Huntsman, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Sleepy Hollow, among others.

So, Speed Readers…what do you think?

UPDATED Wednesday! More photos from Tuesday’s on-location shoot have surfaced, showing the costume in daylight. The Daily Mail has a good round-up (Thanks to Veronicadiall for the link in the comments below).

I’ll admit to being a bit less enthused, particularly over the lackluster belt design. I don’t have a problem with the overall look. My wife suggested it looks a bit like an athletic suit, which makes sense for a runner. The earpieces work best when you can see a three-quarter profile. I agree with Devin “The Flash” Johnson that it’s nice that this costume looks like one he can move in. The yellow piping works better in live-action than on the page or in animation (I thought it looked awful at the end of The Flashpoint Paradox).

I find it interesting that I actually like details like texture in a live-action version of the costume, but prefer a hand-drawn version to be sleek and uncluttered.

I’m still warming up to it, but considering that we’re looking at…

  • A daytime location shoot, meaning they have less control over lighting.
  • Opportunistic shots by bystanders who don’t have as much control over camera angles as the on-set cameras do.
  • Still frames of scenes when the Flash is intended to be seen in motion, or behind-the-scenes moments.
  • Raw images, with no post-processing or special effects.

…I think the jury’s still out.

How about you? What do you think of it now that you’ve seen more photos of the costume?

More Flash casting: Patrick Sabongui as David Singh

Patrick SabonguiTHR is reporting that Patrick Sabongui has been cast as Barry Allen’s boss at the Central City crime lab, Police Captain (not Director?) David Singh. Viewers will no doubt remember that Singh was name-dropped during Barry Allen’s guest spot on Arrow. The role is described as a guest spot that will become a recurring role if the series is picked up.

In the comics, Singh is involved with Hartley Rathaway, a.k.a. the Pied Piper, a former Rogue who has since reformed — though the relationship is kept quiet, because while Hartley is openly gay, David is still in the closet. Hartley Rathaway’s name has been floated as a recurring role, but no casting announcement has been made so far.

The pilot episode has been filming this week, so I assume the casting had already been set and has only just been announced.

Flash TV Pilot Update: Teasers & Sightings from Social Media

The Flash TV pilot starring Grant Gustin is filming this week. Cast and crew have been posting bits of props and sets, and behind-the-scenes shots, while bystanders have been posting photos of cast in their off-camera moments.

Also: Detective West (Iris’ father in this continuity) now has a first name, Joe.

Here’s a round-up of photos and comments I’ve found on social media. Continue reading

Fred Chyre cast in The Flash pilot

IMDB is now listing actor Al Sapienza as playing Central City detective Fred Chyre. Presumably he’ll be a police force colleague of Barry Allen, and it’ll be interesting to see a character from the Wally West era melded into Barry’s supporting cast. It seems likely that Barry’s day job will be a major part of the series, based on the number of police-related characters in the cast (Detective West, Eddie Thawne, and now Chyre).

Sapienza is in his early 50s and is a good physical match to play Chyre. He has a long filmography (including a role in The Sopranos) and is clearly an experienced actor. He should be a good addition to the show’s cast, which is filling out nicely. The pilot begins filming next week.

Nora Allen cast in THE FLASH Pilot

Deadline reports that Michelle Harrison has been cast as Nora Allen, Barry Allen’s mother. We learned in Barry’s Arrow appearances that the show picks up on the post-Rebirth* and New 52 history, in which she was killed during his childhood, and his father was falsely accused and imprisoned for the murder. (In fact, the show hinted that, as in the comics, the Reverse Flash is her real killer.) So we’ll be seeing her in flashbacks.

The pilot for The Flash starts shooting early next month.

*In the original Silver Age and Bronze Age comics, Nora and Henry Allen were still alive throughout Barry Allen’s superhero career. Flash: Rebirth involved the Reverse-Flash changing history.

Flash #28 Preview is Up!

The Flash #28 arrives in stores this Wednesday, and DC Comics has a preview of the issue up on their site.

The Flash and Deadman team up to stop the Keystone Killer! How far back do the killings go, and is his target the key? What or who are the “Fletchers”? Find out in THE FLASH #28, written by Brian Buccellato and illustrated by Patrick Zircher, available in stores this Wednesday.

I think it’s clear who the original Fletcher was, but the question seems to be who the killer thinks are Fletchers.
