Flash #9 Preview & New Covers

DC has posted a preview of Flash #9 (out next week), along with the final covers.

FLASH issue nine, on sale next Wednesday, kicks off the much anticipated Prelude to FLASHPOINT storyline. Writer Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul are crafting a murder mystery with a heck of a twist. Who dies? We won’t say here (yet), but we’ll let this question linger: “You recognize the costume?”

Interestingly, it seems they’ve swapped the primary covers for Flash #9 and Flash #10 to keep the “character-focused” theme running through January’s books as close to January as possible. And while the book was originally solicited with a Scott Kolins variant cover, it’s being shipped with one by Tyler Kirkham.

They’ve also replaced the “Brightest Day” banner with “The Road to Flashpoint.”

Weekend Update: Renegades, Hot Pursuit, Variant Covers

I decided to take a little time this weekend (while I still had some!) to update a few items on Flash: Those Who Ride the Lightning. I’ve finally posted an article on the Renegades (a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash Task Force), and put up a placeholder for Hot Pursuit even though the story arc dealing with him won’t launch until at least January. I also updated the cover variants list with Flash #6 and the preview art we’ve seen for Flash #7 & #8.

I wasn’t really sure where to file the Renegades. They play the role of villains, or at least antagonists, in “The Dastardly Death of the Rogues,” but from what we can see, they do appear to be the “good guys” of their era, acting on what they thought was solid information. I finally ended up putting them in the Heroes category, figuring that if they show up again, they’re more likely to play that role.

Notes — Three Flashes: Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen as Kid Flash. (This also marks both Wally’s and Bart’s first cover appearances — and probably first appearances, unless one of them shows up in flashbacks during the upcoming Rogue Profile issues — in Volume 3. It looks like we won’t have to wait until 2011 to see Wally West in the main Flash book…unless it slips a week.)

I’m not sure what a speedster needs with a motorcycle, but I’ve got to admit that it looks cool. (Hmm, suddenly I’m reminded of the “You can fly! Why do you need a plane!” “You drive a car, don’t you?” exchange at the end of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.)
