A New Flash #1 Hits the Ground Running (Review)

FLS-Cv1-r1-50f2fThis volume of THE FLASH gets off to a good start with issue #1, retelling the origin of the Flash and reintroducing us to the cast of characters…but there is a twist here that is important to note. It may seem a little much to restate the origin of the Flash again (after addressing it a bit in FLASH REBIRTH), but there are some really good reasons to do so here.  This does represent a good jumping on point for new fans, but it also takes a few beats to establish just what being Barry (and being The Flash) means in this new era, pulling key points from past iterations of the Scarlet Speedster. And, the origin story is echoed in a way that directly sets up the arc. We’ll have more for you on all of that…right after the jump.

Flash Photography: Speedster Cosplay at WonderCon 2015

I spent the weekend at WonderCon, and while I didn’t make it to the Flash TV cast signing (they capped the line 20 minutes before I made it to the convention center), I did make it to the cast and crew Q&A session on Sunday, which I’ll be posting about soon. I also spotted quite a few Flashes, Kid Flashes and Quicksilvers among the cosplayers. (and a Thundra, who I kept trying to figure out whenever she walked by until I finally just walked up and asked her what her costume was).

The full photo gallery is up on Flickr, but here’s a highlight of some of the speedsters who slowed down long enough to be caught on camera: Continue reading

A New Kid Flash in Teen Titans / Future’s End

Teen Titans Five Years Later

Also among the Futures End covers revealed today: Teen Titans, by Karl Kerschl (Wednesday Comics: The Flash and Teen Titans Year One). And if a future Wally West wasn’t enough, the “after” team lineup includes what looks to be a new Kid Flash… though her costume looks a bit reminiscent of Speed Freak, a member of the alternate-reality Love Syndicate of Dreamworld who appeared in Grant Morrison’s “Second Crisis” way back in Animal Man #23 (1990).

Also, it looks like we’ve got Lagoon Boy, Klarion the Witch Boy, not sure about the figure in the back, and up front…um…the Tattooine representative of Batman, Inc.?

So Long, Farewell…Review of TEEN TITANS #29

teen titans 29 coverIt has finally come to this…the trial of Kid Flash, and now Solstice is complete and they are preparing for transport to the prison planet.  It’s a time of goodbyes, of thinking about what might have been and what might yet be…

LIGHT SPOILERS ONLY

We start issue #29 with Solstice’s story, and why she cares so much for Kid Flash.  There are some sad goodbyes here, as Tim Drake not only says goodbye to Bart and Kiran but to his vision of the Titans.  His words for Bart are a bit surprising, but what he does after saying goodbye to them is an even bigger surprise…won’t spoil it here, though.  In the end, the remaining Titans make their way back to their own time, and what they find leads us into the upcoming final battle with Harvest so hold on to your hats!

Scott Lobdell has written another excellent script for this series.  I’ve said it before but it bears repeating – your opinion of this story and this series will depend in no small part on whether you can take this New 52 Titans group at face value.  If you are looking for the pre-FLASHPOINT Bart, he isn’t here.  But, if you are looking for a well-crafted tale this is definitely worth the read.  The artwork is exceptional – Scott McDaniel handles the breakdowns, with Tyler Kirkham taking the artwork from there and Arif Prianto on colors.  There is a bittersweet quality to much of this issue, with some interesting twists as well.  There is just one more issue left in the series…that’s a sad note as well, but I am looking forward to the big battle with Harvest next issue.
