Hero Initiative auction

The Hero Initiative is auctioning 104 pieces of original Justice League covers to benefit creators in need. The art was donated by a variety of artists, including popular Flash creators like Francis Manapul and Scott Kolins, and will be sold at three different auctions beginning in December. Because the theme is the Justice League, there are plenty of pieces with the Flash, but also Jesse Quick, the Crime Syndicate’s Johnny Quick, and even the occasional Flash foe.

See all the art pieces here, grouped by when they are to be sold. There are some fairly impressive pieces available, so even if you can’t afford to buy, it’s well worth a look! The site also includes details of when and where the live auctions will be held, and notes that people unable to attend will be permitted to bid by proxy. The proxy bid deadline for the first batch of covers is November 23rd, so be sure to check it out soon.

Hero Initiative is also selling hardcover and softcover books collecting all the art, available in December.

LA Comic Cons 2011: Long Beach & Comikaze

It used to be that if you lived in the Los Angeles area and wanted to attend a comic book convention, you had to either trek down to San Diego for Comic-Con International or hit one of the smaller cons like the one at the Shrine. These days, you can actually take your pick of several mid-sized cons. Wizard World has been well-established since 2004, starting in Long Beach, then Downtown Los Angeles, then Anaheim (skipping 2009).

More immediately: Long Beach Comic Con will hold its third full convention this weekend, and the latest entrant, Comikaze Expo, bursts onto the downtown LA scene the following week.

Flash fans in the area will be able to catch co-writer/artist Brian Buccellato at both cons.

I’ll be attending both conventions, though just one day each. As with this year’s San Diego trip I’ll be focused more on having fun at the con than reporting news (not that there was any shortage of Flash news coverage here), but I doubt there will be any real Flash news announced at either event. I’ve really enjoyed Long Beach the last two years (though I’m a bit concerned about the split focus this year between comics and horror), and I’m curious to see what kind of a convention Comikaze will actually be.

Catch the Flash & Flashpoint Teams at NYCC!

The new Flash writer/artist team, Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, are both scheduled to be at New York Comic Con this weekend. You can also catch the Flashpoint team of Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert.

In addition to signings, Johns will be on Friday’s DC All Access: Green Lantern panel, and Johns, Manapul and Buccellato will all be on DC All Access: Justice League panel on Saturday.

This is Buccellato’s only east-coast appearance on his fall signing schedule, and the only event this fall where you can meet both halves of the current Flash creative team.

Flash co-writer/artist Francis Manapul will be signing at three Toronto-area comic shops on Wednesday, when The Flash hits the shelves.

Wally West the #6 DC Character – Flashes in the Top 50, Final Rankings

We’ve been following Comics Should Be Good as they count down the results of their Top 50 DC & Marvel Characters survey. Wally West ranks #6 on the DC list. He hasn’t been seen much since DC decided to re-focus The Flash on Barry Allen a few years back, but Wally remains a popular character — more popular among the survey respondents than the current headliner, though as we saw a few days ago, Barry made the top 10 as well.

I hope DC considers this when the time comes around for mid-season replacements or expanding the New 52. If there’s room for 12(?) Bat-books including spots for current and past Robins Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian… If there’s room for four Lantern books including spots for all four human Green Lanterns… If there’s room for four Super-books… Then surely there’s room for a second Flash series featuring Wally West, or at the very least a spot on a team book. Barry’s got the main Flash series, Bart’s in Teen Titans, and presumably Jay will be showing up in the Earth-2-set Justice Society of America series when it launches.

About the points: The way voting worked was that you listed your top 10 favorite characters, in order. Your first-place choice got 10 points, your second-place choice got 9 points, etc. According to CSBG, more than 1400 people voted in the survey.

Flash Launch: Brian Buccellato Signings — Fall 2011

The Flash co-writer/artist Brian Buccellato was kind enough to send his signing schedule for the next few weeks. He’ll be appearing at a number of Los Angeles-area events and comic shops, as well as New York Comic-Con.
