Flash vol.4 “Reverse” HC in August

Flash-22DC has announced their summer 2014 collected editions, including the August 13 release date for the hardcover edition of The Flash vol.4. (The paperback will be out next February).

THE FLASH VOL. 4: REVERSE HC

In this new hardcover, a mysterious and powerful Speed-Force killer has left a trail of bodies in his wake, and only Barry has the power to stop him. But when the killer stays one step ahead of him, Barry finds himself face to face with the Teen Titans and Kid Flash for the first time, which leads to a confrontation with the Reverse Flash! Don’t miss these stories from THE FLASH #20-25, and #23.3: REVERSE FLASH!

The “Reverse Flash” one-shot from Villains Month is really the second-to-last chapter of the story, unveiling his origin in the midst of the battle with the Flash.

When first announced, this was also going to include the Grodd one-shot, but that has been moved to the Forever Evil: Rogues Rebellion collection. It makes a lot more sense there, both thematically and in terms of story (it takes place during the Rogues one-shot and sets up the condition of Central City during Rogues’ Rebellion).

Flash Collections for 2014-2015 – 75th Anniversary, Omnibus & More

*whew* Comics Beat rounds up DC’s upcoming collections, and there’s a ton of Flash stuff coming up!

$75.00 USD / $85.00 CAD
400 pages Hardback
Comics & Graphic Novels / Superheroes

Summary: Introduced in 1940, The Flash burst onto the comic book scene with an explosive debut akin to his super-speed powers. He was an instant smash-hit success, as the lightning bolt insignia upon his chest became synonymous with the term “superhero”. Even as seven decades have passed, The Flash is still a vibrant part of the DC Comics lore and an integral part of the genre.

THE FLASH: A CELEBRATION OF 75 YEARS collects a wide range of stories featuring the Scarlet Speedster, ranging his seven decades as a mainstay in the DC Comics universe. From the original Flash, Jay Garrick, to his successors Barry Allen and Wally West, the mantle of this beloved hero has made him burst beyond the printed page into a pop culture symbol. This anthology graphic novel collects stories from the industry’s legendary talents, including Gardner Fox, John Broome and Geoff Johns.

This is totally going on my wish list for next year! I hope it’s more than just a collection of stories (though I’ll get it for that anyway), and has articles about the artists and writers and characters over the years. I’d love this to be a combination of Greatest Stories, Flash Companion, and DC: 75 Years of Modern Mythmaking. I also hope that it actually does justice to all the Flashes. The last “Greatest Flash Stories” collection was short on page space and focused almost entirely on (a) early Barry Allen and (b) a giant team-up one-shot from the 1970s.

Summary: This massive title collects the earliest Silver Age adventures of The Flash, just in time for his debut as the star of the new series THE FLASH on the CW network. Stories include the origin of The Flash, the first appearances of his sidekick, Kid Flash, fellow detective The Elongated Man, and much more.

I’m less enthused by this collection. The same material has been reprinted in several volumes of Flash Archives, Flash Chronicles, and Showcase Presents: The Flash. Every time DC comes up with a new reprint format, they start over at the beginning. The only reason the Showcase books got past the mid-1960s is that they did an extra volume focusing on the Trial of the Flash. I’m beginning to wonder if DC will ever get around to reprinting that 20-year gap between the mid-1960s and the Trial in the mid-1980s. Those stories aren’t even available digitally yet.

That said, if you don’t have the out-of-print Flash Archives, this is a good place to start. And the timing should get them into bookstores ahead of the Flash TV show if it gets picked up.

Gorilla Warfare Hardcover Rescheduled for February

Flash #13: Gorilla WarfareThe Flash vol.3: Gorilla Warfare collection was originally scheduled for a December 2013 release, but was dropped from the schedule a few weeks ago. DC has released an updated late 2013/early 2014 collections list today, including the new release date for the book.

THE FLASH VOL. 3: GORILLA WARFARE HC
Written by FRANCIS MANAPUL and BRIAN BUCCELLATO
Art by FRANCIS MANAPUL, MARCUS TO, MARCIO TAKARA and others
Cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL
RESOLICIT • On sale FEBRUARY 12 • 176 pg, FC, $24.99 US

When Grodd and his army descend on Central City, The Flash will have to contend with a threat that’s murderous, ruthless and without principle. The Flash will need the help of the Rogues if he wants to keep himself and Central City alive. This new hardcover collects THE FLASH #13-19.

It’s not clear why they delayed the book, though my off-the-cuff guess is that it might have something to do with putting more resources toward Forever Evil/Villains Month collections for the Christmas shopping season.

Flash Collections for 2014: Gorilla Warfare and Reverse

Flash #23DC Comics has released their June-August 2014 book list, with two Flash collections hitting stores in August 2014.

The Flash Vol. 3: Gorilla Warfare TP
Collects The Flash #13-19
176 pg, $16.99 US

The Flash Vol. 4: Reverse HC
Collects The Flash #20-24, The Flash #23.1: Grodd and The Flash #23.2: Reverse Flash
176 pg, $24.99 US

I guess that eliminates the speculation about moving the Grodd special from vol.4 to vol.3, which leaves open the question of just what DC is doing with the Gorilla Warfare hardcover (currently scheduled for December 2013).

It’s got to be tough to be a wait-for-trade Flash reader these days. With hardcovers shipping roughly a year after the final chapter of each story, and paperbacks hitting 8-9 months after that, you can easily end up two years behind. I still can’t believe the Move Forward paperback just shipped this month.

Flash Collections Update: Gorilla Warfare & Reverse

Flash #13: Gorilla WarfareTwo updates on upcoming Flash collections.

First up, Collected Editions has located a ton of upcoming DC Comics collections for 2013/2014, including Flash Vol. 4: Reverse, featuring issues #20-24 and the Villains Month Gorilla Grodd and Reverse Flash issues. Reverse Flash makes sense, but Grodd is an odd choice except in the need-to-put-it-somewhere sense. The link to the Reverse entry is down, though, which may be related to this next piece of information.

ComicList’s latest DC Comics Extended Forecast notes that orders for December’s hardcover of Flash vol.3: Gorilla Warfare have been canceled and the book will be resolicited later. As Collected Editions points out, this could indicate a content change. It was originally solicited featurng Flash #13-19, which collects the 5-part “Gorilla Warfare” in #13-17 and a two-part Trickster story in #18-19 with teases for the Reverse Flash.

Pure speculation here, but maybe DC is re-arranging these as follows:

  • Flash Vol.3: Gorilla Warfare – Flash #13-17 and Villains Month Grodd.
  • Flash Vol.4: Reverse – Flash #18-24 and Villains Month Reverse Flash.

It would make more sense than the current breakdown, and put six issues in one book and eight in the next. The only drawback I see is that the Reverse collection would open with the Trickster two-parter instead of jumping straight into the main story that lends its title to the volume.
