Comic-Con 2013: Flash Photography

I’m back from Comic-Con! (Yeah, I know it’s still going on.) I’ve got about 80 photos up on Flickr covering everything from cosplay to protest signs to action figures and statues to booth displays to giant inflatable Teen Titans to — I kid you not — a blimp done up as a Despicable Me minion.

Here’s a selection of Flash-related photos to get you started.

Flash Trio on Casual Day

My wife spotted these three on Friday afternoon — three Flashes on casual Friday! Continue reading

Flash Film Date Announced at SDCC (or not)

The big news out of Comic-Con on Saturday is the announcement of a Flash film. As described by The Hollywood Reporter, a Flash movie is tentatively planned for 2016, with a Justice League film slated in 2017. There will also be a team-up film starring Superman and Batman, due out in 2015 and directed by Zack Snyder. Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman, but it’s not known who will play Batman. And there’s no word yet of actors or scriptwriters for the Flash film.

Finally a possible date for a Flash movie, and he’ll probably be in the Justice League film too! (Otherwise there would be no point to making the Flash film first.) Are you excited? What do you hope to see in both movies?

Edited to add: It seems I may have jumped the gun, as according to Bleeding Cool the film has not been officially announced. Only The Hollywood Reporter’s “sources” have said so at this point. That’s…kind of a kick in the pants, and mea culpa. That said, Bleeding Cool notes that just because it wasn’t announced today doesn’t mean the rumours are false, so fingers crossed.

Trinity War Continues in Justice League of America #6 (review)

JLA_6_r1_zwvgxuxy18_As we left the Trinity War arc in Justice League, it appeared to everyone that Superman had killed Dr. Light…even Superman thinks he did it.  The battle is on between the Justice League and the JLA, with Amanda Waller pulling every string that she can…and with someone else behind all of this!

SDCC Day Two

DC held an All Access panel on Thursday at Comic-Con, and Flash co-writer Brian Buccellato was among the panelists. He and Geoff Johns talked a bit about the Flash title and upcoming Rogues Rebellion limited series.

Buccellato said that we’ll soon learn the identity of the Reverse-Flash (more on that later), and stated that the Flash has to protect Iris from him because she hasn’t manifested powers “yet” — which is an interesting tease.

As reported by CBR,

“The Rogues, they’re going to rebel against something,” joked Buccellato. “They’re about stealing, the score, the job. They want to drink some beers at the end of the day and know they stole something really, really expensive.”

“Brian and I have gotten together a lot to talk about this,” said Johns. “I think they have a great take on the Rogues, but something happens in Forever Evil, but not all the villains are excited about it. It’s like the new boss is worse than the old boss.”

Rogues Rebellion is a five-issue miniseries that Johns likened to The Warriors.

DC also released some preview pages today, which have since been posted at CBR. One page appears to be from Rogues Rebellion and another from the main Flash title, and you are warned about possible major spoilers on the Flash page: it appears to reveal the identity of the Reverse-Flash. However, Newsarama reported that Buccellato says the page “may be a spoiler, or may be a misdirection”, so perhaps not everything is as it seems. All the same, keep that in mind before deciding whether to view the page. You can see both pages after the cut.

New Captain Boomerang Figure Announced At SDCC

boomer dc direct The first day of San Diego Comic-Con is often quiet, but there is one bit of Flash-related news to be announced: there’s going to be a new Captain Boomerang action figure. He’ll be part of a Suicide Squad three-pack with Deadshot and Harley Quinn, and the set will be made by DC Collectibles (formerly DC Direct). The figures are based on the characters’ New 52 designs.

Toyark and Comics Alliance have photos of the set and the rest of the newly-announced DC figures.

I’m always glad to get more Rogues figures, but have to admit it’s slightly disappointing to see a second modern Boomerang so soon after the previous Mattel release. It would have been nice to see a classic Digger at some point, but that’s probably unlikely now.

Another item of possible interest is the new Scribblenauts Unmasked vinyl blind boxed figures — none of the photos I’ve seen show any Flash-related characters, but it’s hard to believe there won’t be any, at least if these figures sell well. I’d love a little Flash and some Rogues, so I really hope some are produced in the future.

That’s all for today! What do you think of the figures?

To Comic Con! (2013 Edition)

SDCC Banner

Comic-Con International starts tonight and runs through Sunday, and as usual, Speed Force will be there to provide you with Flash-centric coverage.

Covering the Con

I’ll be onsite Thursday and Friday, tweeting and sharing photos from the floor, and posting photos nightly to Flickr. I’ll also be participating in SDCCBlog’s photo & video event on Google+. Watch for live coverage in the following places:

Plus we’ll be keeping an eye on the news reports out of the con for Flash-related announcements and Q&A items from panels.

Help Wanted

Sadly, I won’t be able to make the Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox premiere on Friday evening. If you’re going to be at the con, plan on catching the premeire, and would like to write up the after-screening discussion panel, please let me know through the contact form. Thank you!

Downtime on Thursday

In a case of unfortunate timing, our web host will be doing scheduled maintenance on Thursday, so the site will be down for about an hour sometime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm Pacific time. I’ve set up a static mirror, so the front page and existing articles should stay up, but commenting and new articles won’t be available during that time. Sorry, no liveblog of the DC All Access panel.

Past Conventions

We covered two other conventions earlier this year:

We’ve also got a list of Tips for Comic-Con to help you make your most of San Diego (and other cons, though some of the tips are SDCC-specific). Finally, here’s the archive of all our 2012 Comic-Con coverage from last year.
