Flashpoint #1 Preview (and XS)

For those who missed the preview in DC’s Free Comic Book Day offering this weekend, you can catch several pages of the 8-page preview online at USA Today and at Comics Nexus.

The pages at USA Today answer another question that has had speedster fans confused since Saturday: a possible new speedster in the Flash Family panel. Fans had been debating whether she was a horribly mis-colored XS or a new character. The USA Today pages have been corrected, making it clear that yes, she’s meant to be XS.

Good to know, though I have to wonder how getting a character’s skin, hair and costume all wrong made it as far as the printed copy of a high-profile promotional book. (Though I suspect DC put far more effort into the Green Lantern part of the book, because, let’s be honest: a big summer movie trumps a big summer comic book every time.)

[Update: DC Women Kicking Ass has the panel in question, with the printed FCBD and corrected online versions. (via Bleeding Cool)]

Along with the preview, USA Today interviews Geoff Johns, Andy Kubert and others about the event.

New Variant Cover for Flash #10 by Ed Benes

DC has released a preview of this week’s issue, labeling it as the “Secret Origin of Hot Pursuit.” Although DC previously identified a piece by Yildiray Cinar as the variant cover for #10, the final version features a cover by Ed Benes which looks quite similar to the standard cover by Francis Manapul, minus the other Flashes.

This Week: Flash #10

This week sees the long-awaited release of The Flash #10, the second part of “Road to Flashpoint!”

Written by Geoff Johns; Art and cover by Fransic Manapul; 1:10 Variant cover by Yildiray Cinar.

The prelude to summer’s FLASHPOINT event continues! The new speedster known as Hot Pursuit has arrived on his Cosmic Motorcycle, but what terrible warning has he brought with him? The FLASHPOINT is closing in, and it looks like no one will be safe!

DC Universe – 32pg. – $2.99 US

Update: As Wayne points out, DC has released a 4-page preview of the issue including the final covers. The Yildiray Cinar alternate cover has been replaced with one by Ed Benes.

Also this week: the PVC “Ame-Comi” figurine featuring Jesse Quick as the Flash:

Preview the Superboy/Kid Flash Race

DC has released a preview of next week’s Superboy #5, featuring a race between the Boy of Steel and Kid Flash. And check out that variant cover by Francis Manapul!

Get ready for the first-ever Superboy/Kid Flash race! Bart Allen may have the speed, but Conner Kent has the power – who will win?! Meanwhile, a dangerous threat is nipping at their heels, one that may mean the end for Superboy, Kid Flash and all of Smallville!

Written by JEFF LEMIRE; Art by PIER GALLO; Cover by EDDY BARROWS & J.P. MAYER; 1:10 Variant cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL

Manapul has a double connection to this book: Before taking over as the regular artist on The Flash, he also teamed with Geoff Johns for a short run on Adventure Comics starring Superboy.

You can read the preview at The Source or at Comic Book Resources.

Flash #9 Preview & New Covers

DC has posted a preview of Flash #9 (out next week), along with the final covers.

FLASH issue nine, on sale next Wednesday, kicks off the much anticipated Prelude to FLASHPOINT storyline. Writer Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul are crafting a murder mystery with a heck of a twist. Who dies? We won’t say here (yet), but we’ll let this question linger: “You recognize the costume?”

Interestingly, it seems they’ve swapped the primary covers for Flash #9 and Flash #10 to keep the “character-focused” theme running through January’s books as close to January as possible. And while the book was originally solicited with a Scott Kolins variant cover, it’s being shipped with one by Tyler Kirkham.

They’ve also replaced the “Brightest Day” banner with “The Road to Flashpoint.”

Read the preview at The Source or at CBR.

Update: Francis Manapul has been posting scans of the uncolored interior artwork on his DeviantArt page: Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 5, and Page 6.

Flash #8 Preview Available

DC has posted a preview of Flash #8 (arriving next week), along with the final covers by Scott Kolins and Stanley “Artgerm” Lau. It’s the second of two Rogue Profile issues by Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins. Francis Manapul returns next issue for the second story arc, “Hot Pursuit.”

For some reason I didn’t expect them to actually call the book “Reverse-Flash Rebirth.” Read on at the Source or at CBR.
