Surprise Star of DC Digital Father’s Day Sale

I never thought I’d open up an email from ComiXology with a giant banner featuring Wally West with Iris and Jai, but here you go:

ComiXology’s DC Father’s Day Sale features “The Wild Wests” and Flash #237, since they deal heavily with Wally West as a father, as well as the main Flashpoint and Batman Knight of Vengeance miniseries (less for the Flash, and more for the Batman). The Flashpoint books have been up for a while, and are discounted to 99 cents each for the sale. The Flash issues are up for the first time.

I’m thinking this might be a good opportunity to read Batwoman: Elegy or some more Starman. (Unfortunately I can’t remember how far into the series I got when I started – I may have already read all the ones in the sale.)

This Week: Digital Flash(back) #25-27 – The Porcupine Man

It looks safe to say that DC and ComiXology have settled into a pattern, releasing three issues of the 1987-2009 Flash series each week. Among this week’s releases are Flash #25-27, featuring the middle segment of the “Porcupine Man” storyline that ran from Flash #24-28.

After the events of Invasion!, Wally West has been left powerless. In Flash #24, a team of scientists tries to re-create the accidents that gave him and Barry Allen their super-speed. It works…but his control is gone. In the moment he starts running, he cuts a swath of destruction across North America, then disappears. The next few issues follow scientists Tina and Jerry McGee and Wally’s neighbor Mason Trollbridge as they follow his trail and search for Wally West, only to find rumors of a legendary creature of the southwest desert: the Porcupine Man.

Update: I didn’t notice it in the blog post, but ComiXology has also added a digital edition of DC Presents: The Flash #1, a reprint book from 2011 containing a collection of Silver-Age time-travel stories.

Spotlighting tales of time travel and the Rogues! Collects [ed. note: stories from] SHOWCASE #4 and 14, THE FLASH (1959-1985) #125, 130 and 139, pitting The Scarlet Speedster against Mirror Master, Captain Boomerang, The Top, Captain Cold, and more! NOTE: some issues are available individually online.

It’s a bit of an odd choice: wouldn’t it make more sense to digitize the original issues and then bundle them, rather add content from The Flash somewhere other than The Flash? I guess this way is easier since DC has already restored these stories, and they don’t have to take the time to restore the other story from each issue. (Most Silver-Age Flash issues contained two short stories instead of one full-length story.)

Showcase #4 (including “The Man Who Broke the Time Barrier”) and Flash #125 (“Conquerors of Time”) are already on ComiXology. Flash #139 (“Menace of the Reverse-Flash”) is a full-length story, so the only thing missing is the cover. That leaves one story each from Showcase #14 (“Giants of the Time World” is in this collection, but Dr. Alchemy’s first appearance isn’t) and Flash #130 (“Who Doomed the Flash?” is collected, but not “Kid Flash Meets the Elongated Man”) needed to get a full set in the library for the series itself.

» Flash (1987-2009) at ComiXology

I missed the fact that Flash v.2 #19-21 went up at ComiXology last Wednesday sometime over the last week. Flash #22-24 will be up this Wednesday. These six feature the (in)famous Rogues Gallery party (the Trickster invites Wally West to Captain Boomerang’s Cold’s celebration of his Suicide Squad-earned pardon, figuring the Flash wouldn’t dare show his face…and he does), the Invasion tie-in issues where the Flash and Manhunter fight shape-shifting aliens in Cuba, a creepy appearance by Abra Kadabra, and the lead-in to the Porcupine Man storyline.

Unfortunately, it looks like the two Manhunter issues that the Flash crossed over with during Invasion aren’t available yet. (Neither is Invasion!, but at least that’s available as a trade paperback.) The two Flash issues read well on their own, but Flash #21 and Manhunter #8 are an interesting pair of stories, in which you see the same events from two different perspectives.

If you ever do manage to track down the Manhunter and Invasion issues, I’d recommend reading them in this order:

Young Justice: Legacy Screenshot Featuring Kid Flash

Flash video game news keeps on coming! This past Friday the upcoming game, Young Justice: Legacy’s Facebook page reached 2000 “likes” and as promised the developers, Little Orbit,  revealed a special screenshot featuring Kid Flash (Wally West):

The screenshot depicts Kid Flash facing down perennial Batman villain, Bane on the island of Santa Prisca, a fictional locale from the animated series. It is unclear what console this screenshot is from but I’m hoping that it is either from the Wii or just a really early build. I am by no means someone easily swayed by pretty graphics (a lot of my favorite games are 2D and from the 16 bit era or below) but I’ve just come to expect more in 2012; Especially when games routinely start out at 60 bucks a pop! This looks like something more akin to the Playstation 2 than a Playstation 3 or xbox 360. I can only hope that playing as Kid Flash will be as awesome as I think it will be.

Little Orbit has released 3 other screenshots throughout the month of May featuring various other members of the team that can be found at the Young Justice: Legacy Facebook page.

The game itself is due to be released in February of 2013 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS.

Young Justice “Bloodlines”: More Speedsters!

Promotional photos have finally been released for tomorrow’s Young Justice Episode, “Bloodlines” by Peter David. Months ago, he wrote about the voice recording sessions featuring Jay Garrick alongside Barry Allen and Wally West, leading us to speculate that it would be a Flash Family-centric episode.

As it turns out there’s another speedster appearing!

Yes, the rumors were true: Bart Allen is appearing in the episode as Impulse!

@SuperheroShows was kind enough to point me to Worlds Finest Online, where they have six still images plus a 50-second preview clip. Update: Chrome is blocking that link as unsafe. Here’s a copy at Superman Homepage. (How does one get on the mailing list for these preview releases?)

Here’s how the episode is described:

An intruder mysteriously appears inside Mount Justice, claiming to be a tourist from the future. But who is he really? And what is his true agenda?

Young Justice “Bloodlines” airs Saturday June 2 at 10:30 am Eastern/Pacific Time on Cartoon Network.

Jay, Barry, Wally and Bart.

Not only that, but Bart as Impulse, written by Peter David, who wrote the entire run of the original Young Justice series.

I am so looking forward to this!

Digital Flash in Grant Morrison Sale

ComiXology is running a 99-cent sale on Grant Morrison comics, including the nine issues of The Flash he co-wrote with Mark Millar in the late 1990s.

I think all of these have been available for a while now (several months ago I bought Flash #134, the incredible Jay Garrick solo story, to check out the image quality at the normal $1.99 price), but if you’ve been waiting for a chance to read Wally West in “Emergency Stop” or “The Human Race” for cheap, now’s your chance.
