Van Scivers: Local Hero and Signing

Two items of note:

First, Sharis Van Sciver, wife of Flash: Rebirth artist Ethan Van Sciver, is in the news today for leading a growling dog away from a group of school children. The dog, which showed signs of abuse and had apparently broken its chain and escaped, bit her hand, but her injuries are minor. (via Blog@Newsarama)

Second, Flash fans in the Orlando, Florida area should take note: Ethan Van Sciver will be doing a free signing for Flash: Rebirth at A Comic Shop in Winter Park, Florida (that’s the actual name of the store) on April 3.

Velocity and Well-Spoken Sonic Lightning Flash

Joe Casey talks to CBR about Dance, the Final Crisis aftermath book featuring Japan’s Super Young Team. Two speedster connections: first, the Super Young Team has their very own speedster, Well-Spoken Sonic Lightning Flash. Second: Casey and Dance artist ChrisCross were going to be the team on Top Cow’s Velocity series, and Casey talks a little about what happened to that.

Y’know, we were primed to do a “Velocity” series for Top Cow and although I wrote and got paid for three issues and Cross penciled a first issue that was so visually stunning and the best-looking thing Top Cow would’ve published this year, somewhere along the line that famous Top Cow brand of common sense disappeared into an unexpectedly bizarre rift in time and space, they started firing staff left and right – including our beloved editor – and our book was suddenly no more, resulting in an obviously broken promise to four million Pilot Season voters. Ouch.

But, hey, their loss is DC’s gain, right? Before you could say, ‘Diamond minimums,’ Cross and I landed on this series, which, let’s face it, is a lot cooler and will probably sell a few more copies.

Light Week…then WonderCon

WonderCon 2009This week’s going to be a bit light because I’ll be on vacation. That’s not to say I won’t be around — I’ve pre-written and scheduled a couple of posts, some of the hotels will have wifi, and I’ve got a near-permanent link to the Internet now in the form of a G1 phone — but I’ll be spending a lot of time doing touristy things and hanging out with people instead of spending all day in front of a computer.

Then at the end of the week I’ll be attending WonderCon in San Francisco. Keep an eye on @SpeedForceOrg on Twitter and my Flickr photos, plus I’ll make occasional posts here. My con report(s) will go up at K-Squared Ramblings, with anything Flash-specific here.

Speedsters: Doomed to Die?

Things looked bad last week for Heroes’ resident speedster, Daphne Millbrook. And speedsters in comic books — Flashes especially — have a noted history of dying for the greater good. Actress Brea Grant notes in her blog:

for all of the millions of people who have asked about my character on heroes, just keep watching.

Can the super-fast thief-turned-courier outrace death?
