A few days ago we posted the winning entries in our “Why I Like the Flash” contest, but would be remiss if we didn’t showcase the others as well, because they’re all quite good. Without further ado, here’s part two (of three) of the contest entries we received.

Why I Love the Flash – Contest Winners
Speed Force held a contest to celebrate our fifth anniversary in June, and though it took a while to finish (sorry about that), things are finally back on track. We are pleased to announce the winners, and to share everyone’s stories!
The question posed to readers was simply why do you like the Flash?, and thirteen people responded with some wonderful entries. There were beautiful stories, photographs, and fan art which were a delight to see. We will reprint them all here for everyone to enjoy, broken up into several posts for ease of reading.
Comic-Con 2013 — Well, That Was Different
It often takes me several weeks to finish writing up the whole Comic-Con experience, and while I’ll probably think of a few things I need to add somewhere, I’ve actually finished already, just hours after the convention’s end.
You can read my full article at K-Squared Ramblings, where I write about:
- Trying to blend the chaos of Comic Con with the chaos of a toddler.
- Booth-sitting for Brian Buccellato.
- Doing the impossible: adding a night’s hotel stay during the con (and not at the Bates Motel!)
- Losing Friday afternoon to a stay in the emergency room. (Food allergies. We hates them.)
- Breakfast fiasco and success.
- Thwarted attempts to get exclusives.
- Protester parodies, floating minions, giant Teen Titans, and lots and lots of LEGO.
- Oh yeah, and costumes too.
Comic-Con 2013: Flash Photography
I’m back from Comic-Con! (Yeah, I know it’s still going on.) I’ve got about 80 photos up on Flickr covering everything from cosplay to protest signs to action figures and statues to booth displays to giant inflatable Teen Titans to — I kid you not — a blimp done up as a Despicable Me minion.
Here’s a selection of Flash-related photos to get you started.
My wife spotted these three on Friday afternoon — three Flashes on casual Friday! Continue reading
To Comic Con! (2013 Edition)
Comic-Con International starts tonight and runs through Sunday, and as usual, Speed Force will be there to provide you with Flash-centric coverage.
Covering the Con
I’ll be onsite Thursday and Friday, tweeting and sharing photos from the floor, and posting photos nightly to Flickr. I’ll also be participating in SDCCBlog’s photo & video event on Google+. Watch for live coverage in the following places:
- @SpeedForceOrg on Twitter
- Photos at @SpeedForceOrg on Instagram
- Photos at KelsonV on Flickr (here are my past convention photos).
- SDCCBlog’s 2013 San Diego Comic-Con Photo and Video Experience
Plus we’ll be keeping an eye on the news reports out of the con for Flash-related announcements and Q&A items from panels.
Help Wanted
Sadly, I won’t be able to make the Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox premiere on Friday evening. If you’re going to be at the con, plan on catching the premeire, and would like to write up the after-screening discussion panel, please let me know through the contact form. Thank you!
Downtime on Thursday
In a case of unfortunate timing, our web host will be doing scheduled maintenance on Thursday, so the site will be down for about an hour sometime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm Pacific time. I’ve set up a static mirror, so the front page and existing articles should stay up, but commenting and new articles won’t be available during that time. Sorry, no liveblog of the DC All Access panel.
Past Conventions
We covered two other conventions earlier this year:
- WonderCon Photos & Write-Up (Kelson at K-Squared Ramblings)
- HeroesCon Photos Day 1 (Ed)
- HeroesCon Photos Day 3 (Ed)
We’ve also got a list of Tips for Comic-Con to help you make your most of San Diego (and other cons, though some of the tips are SDCC-specific). Finally, here’s the archive of all our 2012 Comic-Con coverage from last year.
Flash Fans At The Most Interesting Times…and Places
Today, I stopped by my favorite LCS, Ultimate Comics in Durham, North Carolina, to get in on a book signing and to say farewell to one of the folks signing books…Jason Strutz, who is moving to Michigan. Jason provides the colors for a book published by Action Lab’s Danger Zone mature readers imprint, called “Ehmm Theory”, written by Brockton McKinney and penciled/inked by Larkin Ford…and all of them were on hand today. For those who aren’t familiar with this title…look it up, this is a delightfully bizarre series and loads of fun to read.
What does this have to do with the Flash? Hang on, I’m getting to that.
The cover for “Ehmm Theory” #1 conveniently leaves room for additional sketching…and while I tried to think of something to request, Jason (who knows that I write for SpeedForce) interrupted with the perfect idea for a title like this…a monster version of the Flash! That started up some Flash-related conversation, and we found that the writer of the series, Brockton McKinney, is a big Flash fan…and follower of this site! At the end of the day I have a great cover (below – click on it and you’ll get a better pic of The Flash) and enjoyed getting to talk to indie creators who also enjoy reading about The Fastest Man Alive. Here’s a couple of pics for you (I’m the old guy in the blue shirt)…enjoy!
