Debut of the Justice League: War Trailer

IGN has posted the trailer for the next upcoming DC Animation film, Justice League: War. Based on Geoff Johns’ and Jim Lee’s first Justice League storyline in the New 52, the film is the first animation feature to be set in the New 52 universe. The Flash appears in the trailer, but takes something of a back seat to some of the other Justice League members.

Confirmed: Manapul and Buccellato take over Detective Comics

Batman by Francis Manapul

DC Comics announced through USA Today that Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, who are leaving The Flash after November’s Flash #25, will be taking over Detective Comics next spring.

They spoke to USA Today about focusing on the “detective” side of Batman, introducing additional supporting cast to “focus on the importance of family to Bruce Wayne,” and Batman’s obsession with protecting Gotham City. “Unlike other heroes who protect their home because they want to, Batman has to. He’s going to be such a fun character to sink our teeth into.”

Brian Buccellato stresses that they have a “gritty and dark side” more suited to Batman than their lighter take on the Flash and Central City. Readers concerned that the book will be too bright for Batman may want to look outside DC Comics to Buccellato’s solo writing on Foster at Dog Year Comics and and The Black Bat at Dynamite.

The article doesn’t say exactly when Manapul and Buccellato will be taking over the book, and but it’s after Detective Comics #27, which will be a special anniversary issue.

No word yet on the new Flash creative team.

Update: Rob S. points out in the comments an interview at CBR in which the team talks about their approach to Batman, and mentions that Brian Buccellato will stay on as solo Flash writer for three more issues.

Quicksilver Cast in Avengers Sequel

It’s being reported that Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) has been cast as Quicksilver in the big-screen Avengers: Age of Ultron, joining Elisabeth Olsen as his sister the Scarlet Witch (via ComicsAlliance).

It will be interesting to compare the two different takes on the character; Marvel’s most well-known speedster is also appearing in X-Men: Days of Future Past, where he’ll be played by Evan Peters.

Flash Artist Greg LaRocque Announces ‘Heroes of CircleHaven’ Kickstarter

Former Flash artist Greg LaRocque has announced a new Kickstarter project, The Heroes of CircleHaven.  Seeking backing and collaboration on a new graphic novel, LaRocque says he will draw on his experiences as an artist and engage the concepts of mythology and fan input in a new way.  We spoke with LaRocque via email, where he elaborated and revealed potential speedster ties, including a dimension seen in his 2011 issue of DC Retroactive: The Flash.

The working title for my KickStarter project, has been CircleHaven 33.3 As I think back to the start of my career in comics & why I’m doing a KickStarter, I realize it’s been just about 33.3 years since I received my 1st assignment from DC Comics. Since that day I’ve had the fantastic opportunity to work on & contribute to some books & characters you might recognize. Illustrating & telling stories of iconic characters that are so deeply embedded in the American culture and known worldwide is a dream come true to the kid who began collecting comics with Fantastic Four . Has the entire story been told?  Maybe not.

To Comic Con! (2013 Edition)

SDCC Banner

Comic-Con International starts tonight and runs through Sunday, and as usual, Speed Force will be there to provide you with Flash-centric coverage.

Covering the Con

I’ll be onsite Thursday and Friday, tweeting and sharing photos from the floor, and posting photos nightly to Flickr. I’ll also be participating in SDCCBlog’s photo & video event on Google+. Watch for live coverage in the following places:

Plus we’ll be keeping an eye on the news reports out of the con for Flash-related announcements and Q&A items from panels.

Help Wanted

Sadly, I won’t be able to make the Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox premiere on Friday evening. If you’re going to be at the con, plan on catching the premeire, and would like to write up the after-screening discussion panel, please let me know through the contact form. Thank you!

Downtime on Thursday

In a case of unfortunate timing, our web host will be doing scheduled maintenance on Thursday, so the site will be down for about an hour sometime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm Pacific time. I’ve set up a static mirror, so the front page and existing articles should stay up, but commenting and new articles won’t be available during that time. Sorry, no liveblog of the DC All Access panel.

Past Conventions

We covered two other conventions earlier this year:

We’ve also got a list of Tips for Comic-Con to help you make your most of San Diego (and other cons, though some of the tips are SDCC-specific). Finally, here’s the archive of all our 2012 Comic-Con coverage from last year.
