The Ballad of Barry Allen

Now seems like a good time to post about “The Ballad of Barry Allen.” The song tells about Barry’s life as the Flash, and how lonely it can be at super-speed. The band, Jim’s Big Ego, is headed by the nephew of legendary Flash artist Carmine Infantino, who did the cover artwork on the album.

And yes, the song’s actually good!

It’s available as a digital download on iTunes, on Amazon’s MP3 store, on Slabster and on CD. I originally bought it through iTunes, but it’s worth looking at Amazon or Slabster since the tracks are just plain MP3s. No DRM, no account activation, no need to authorize computers or stick with one company’s player—hardware or software.

Flash Gordon Does Not Have Super-Speed

Spotted this article on Sony’s planned Flash Gordon movie: ‘Flash Gordon’ pace quickens with scribes. It opens with the tagline, “‘Flash Gordon’ is moving ahead at breakneck speed.” Those are odd comments for an ordinary guy who ends up having adventures in space, but appropriate for a super-speedster…. Yeah. Someone else got the Flash and Flash Gordon confused. It’s a typical example of what TV Tropes calls Cowboy Bebop at his Computer.

It fits with society’s general contempt for both comic books and science-fiction. If you ask whether a football team is playing in the World Series, people will look at you like you’re an idiot. But it’s okay to get Star Wars and Star Trek mixed up to the point where Dr. Spock has a lightsaber and Yoda says, “Live long and prosper.” In fact, many people look down on you if you do understand the difference.

Oddly, our mainstream culture is quite willing to go see science-fiction and comic-book films, as long as they have enough explosions. Take a look at the 30 top-grossing films list, and it’s one sci-fi, fantasy, or super-hero after another. (Exceptions: Titanic, Passion of the Christ, and Forrest Gump. I’m counting movies with talking animals as “fantasy.”) I guess it’s okay to watch the stuff, as long as you don’t remember too much about it afterward.

It also fits with the annoying tendency of headline writers to use the “Holy XYZ!” phrasing from the 1960s Batman TV show as if it’s somehow still relevant to modern-day comics or movies, despite a massive cultural shift away from camp and toward serious (and, in many cases, downright dark) storytelling over the past 20 years. That second link lists almost 50 examples from July alone!

I guess actually paying attention to what they write about would make them less cool or something.

Heroes Speedster Studies the Flash

According to the L.A. Times‘ Show Tracker, Brea Grant, who plays the super-speedster Daphne in the new season of Heroes, prepared for her role by reading a long box–worth of Flash comics.

A little ball of Texas fun, Brea Grant said that it was “kind of daunting” joining the “Heroes’ cast but prepared herself for her super-speed role well, being the “nerd” that she is.

“I read a bunch of Flash comics, and now I have about this many (spreads her arms about three feet apart). I tried to watch the Flash TV series, but it was really bad.”

She also discusses the possible uses of super-speed in ordinary life:

“If I had it [super speed] in real life … it’d be amazing. My room would always be clean. I’d never run out of cereal…”

It’s worth noting that in the season opener, she appears wearing red. Yes: she shows up as a scarlet speedster.

Flash Companion Linkage: Waid on Bart as Flash

This week’s Lying in the Gutters includes an excerpt from The Flash Companion. It’s a later segment from the same Mark Waid interview that I previously posted here (on creating Impulse). In this segment, Waid discusses the editorial directive from above that changed Impulse to Kid Flash, and then Kid Flash to the Flash.

It’s about 2/3 of the way through the column, the section labeled “Flashburning Bridges.”

Showcase: The Top #4

Comics Should be Good has been running a Top 50 Countdown of the “most notable issue numbers in comic book history,” with the top issue #1, the top issue #2, the top issue #3, etc. They’ve been revealing the numbers in a more-or-less random order, and wrapped up the series today with #4. Their choice: Showcase #4, the 1956 comic in which DC Comics decided to try revitalizing super-heroes with a revamped Flash, and launched the Silver Age of Comics.
