Flash! Jay Garrick’s Helmet on Smallville

It looks like we’ll get another glimpse of the Golden-Age Flash on Smallville. Jay Garrick himself isn’t appearing in Absolute Justice, but we have seen a painting of the entire Justice Society, and now KryptonSite has spotted Jay Garrick’s helmet in the previews:

Since it’s black and white, I assume it’s a flashback sequence. Probably to the disbanding of the Justice Society, with the Flash having left his helmet behind to send the message that they’re retiring.

Something I find interesting is that the stylized feathers on the wings appear to be separate pieces with gaps in between them, rather than being sculpted into a solid wing. I’ve seen variations ranging from realistic wings to parallel ribbons like this, but I think this is the first one I’ve seen with clear gaps.

Batman can breathe in space, but the Flash can't.Comics Alliance has a couple of Flashy items: First, a page from the Shortpacked! coloring book: Batman Can Breathe In Space, But Not The Flash.

Second: they look back at a pair of Baby Ruth commercials from the 1990s, featuring Hawkman and an obvious Flash stand-in called the Blur. They have a video clip of the Blur commercial. Fun fact: The Blur was played by Tim Thomerson, who played Barry Allen’s brother Jay in the pilot episode of the 1990 Flash TV show.

Speaking of the Flash TV series, it makes Comic Book Movie’s list of Top Ten Most Accurate Live Action Superhero Costumes

The Secret of Wednesday’s Haul contrasts Ethan Van Sciver and Carmine Infantino in their approaches to conveying speed.

New Heroes Speedster Trained in the Jedi Arts

It took the TV series Heroes three seasons to introduce a speedster. Daphne Millbrook was a major character during the “Villains” arc (Volume 3), playing against both Hiro Nakamura and Matt Parkman, and had a smaller role in “Fugitives” (Volume 4). I won’t spoil “Fugitives” for the two people out there who haven’t seen it and want to, but she’s not coming back this season.

This year’s Heroes panel at Comic-Con introduced a new group of players for the upcoming arc, “Redemption” (Volume 5): a traveling carnival made up of people who have super-powers, hiding in plain sight. (Everyone’s making comparisons to Carnivale, but I can’t help but think of Payne’s carnival in Girl Genius.) Among them is Edgar, a knife-thrower played by Ray Park, best known as Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. He also appears as Snake Eyes in the live-action G.I. Joe movie opening this weekend.

Edgar is described as “a speedster with a mission.” Footage played at the panel showed him using his power not for running, but for combat agility as he fought power-magnet Peter Petrelli.

Appropriately enough, the actor kept moving throughout the panel, making it hard for Katie to snap a photo of him that was in focus.

Flash on Smallville This Week

Well, Impulse, anyway. Be sure to tune in to Smallville this week as Bart Allen (Kyle Gallner) returns for the season finale, “Doomsday.”

Bart previously appeared in the fourth-season episode, “Run,” for which he was billed as the Flash, and the sixth-season “Justice” (alongside Green Arrow, Cyborg, and Aquaman), where he was given the name Impulse. This time, Justice League members include Black Canary and Green Arrow.

Bart Allen Returns to Smallville

Kryptonsite is reporting that Kyle Gallner will return as Bart Allen in the May 14 season finale of Smallville, “Doomsday.”

This version of Bart originally appeared in the fourth-season episode, “Run” (2004), in which he was billed in advertisements as The Flash, then returned for the sixth-season episode “Justice” (2007). This time he was working with Green Arrow, Aquaman, and Cyborg, forming the beginnings of what would one day become the Justice League of America. His teammates gave him a different code-name, though: Impulse.

According to Kryptonsite, Justice Leaguers Green Arrow and Black Canary will also appear in the episode, along with Cosmic Boy of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Which reminds me, I really need to get around to watching the Geoff Johns-scripted LSH episode sometime. I wonder if Smallville is on Hulu or something.
