This Week: Flash by Geoff Johns Omnibus, vol.1

When Geoff Johns relaunched The Flash with Flash: Rebirth, readers wondered why DC had let most of his first run on the series go out of print. Then they announced a new, high-quality hardcover reprint series. The first volume comes out this week.

The Flash Omnibus by Geoff Johns

Written by GEOFF JOHNS ; Art by ANGEL UNZUETA, DOUG HAZLEWOOD, SCOTT KOLINS, ETHAN VAN SCIVER and others; Cover by SCOTT KOLINS

The first in a series of hardcover volumes that collect all of the best-selling issues of THE FLASH written by comics superstar Geoff Johns, beginning with issues #164-176, plus THE FLASH: OUR WORLDS AT WAR #1, THE FLASH: IRON HEIGHTS and THE FLASH SECRET FILES #3!

In this volume, Wally West finds himself without his super speed in a darker, mirror version of Keystone City. Can a powerless Flash defeat Captain Cold and Mirror Master to save the city he loves? Plus, The Flash is shocked to learn that a strange cult is killing all the people he has ever rescued. Featuring art by fan-favorites Ethan Van Sciver, Scott Kolins and more!

DC Universe – 448pg. – Color – Hardcover – $75.00 US

Thoughts: The price is steep, but from what I’ve heard, it’s in line with the paper and binding quality on these books. It’s basically a double-length Archive book, and those typically sell for $50.

The contents were previously collected in the trade paperbacks Wonderland and Blood Will Run. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that the Flash: Our Worlds At War special has been collected.

Buy it from your local comic shop this week, or order it from Amazon next week!

This Week: Flash #12, Flashpoint #1, DC Presents: The Flash

It’s a big week for the Flash: The final issue of this series (though of course you know it’s coming back), plus the start of DC Comics’ first-ever Flash-centric giant event, plus a reprint collection of classic Flash stories.

Not a dream, not an imaginary story, not an elseworld. This is Flash Fact: When Barry Allen wakes at his desk, he discovers the world has changed. It’s a place where America’s last hope is Cyborg, who hopes to gather the forces of The Outsider, The Secret 7, S!H!A!Z!A!M!, Citizen Cold and other new and familiar-yet-altered faces! It’s a world that could be running out of time, if The Flash can’t find the villain who altered the time line!

The road to FLASHPOINT is paved with good intentions, but the Flash is about to learn the truth behind those good intentions — and the secret of Hot Pursuit!

DC Universe 32pg. Color $2.99 US

I’m guessing this isn’t Hot Pursuit’s secret. Also: Scott Kolins’ variant cover is pretty cool.

Flash: Rebirth (Softcover)

Written by GEOFF JOHNS; Art and cover by ETHAN VAN SCIVER

Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver, the writer/artist team behind the blockbuster GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH and THE SINESTRO CORPS WAR, create an explosive, jaw-dropping epic that reintroduces Barry Allen as The Flash in this new collection of the fast-paced 6-issue miniseries. But how will this greatest of all Flashes find his place in the 21st century?

DC Universe 168pg. Color Softcover $14.99 US

Has it really taken this long for the softcover collection to come out? It’s almost exactly a year since the hardcover release. (I guess they really are following a book publishing style schedule.)

Velocity #4

story: Ron Marz
art & cover: Kenneth Rocafort

The clock counts down to zero as the taut, pulse pounding series races to its conclusion. Carin Taylor, the hero known as Velocity, has been infected with a deadly techno-virus. Thus far she has been successful in saving most of her teammates from the same virus, but now the exertion is taking its toil and the fastest girl in the world may not be able to win this race. The issue concludes the creative collaboration of writer Ron Marz (Witchblade, Angelus) and artist Kenneth Rocafort (Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer).

Ivan Reis’ variant cover for Brightest Day #23 focuses on everyone’s* favorite resurrected boomerang-throwing Rogue. DC has a 4-page preview of the issue, which hits stores today.

One one issue left after this one. The end is near!

*Some might prefer other boomerang-throwing Rogues who have not been resurrected at this time.

This Week: Superman Races the Flash

It seems like just last week that Kid Flash and Superboy raced against each other…oh, wait — it was! Now Superman and the Flash get in on the action.

Superman #709

Superman visits Boulder, Colorado, as “Grounded” races forward! And speaking of racing, here comes The Flash! The Scarlet Speedster has made a strange discovery that relates to Superman, so he tracks The Man of Steel down in the Centennial State to get some answers! What did Flash discover? Well, let’s just say there’s a reason Superman isn’t very happy to see him…

DC has a one-page preview at The Source. And speaking of Kenneth Rocafort, the concluding issue of Velocity is currently on Top Cow’s calendar for March 30.
