This wraps up the softcover collections (it’s available in hardcover already) of the original New 52 Flash run by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. Manapul had already left to start on Detective Comics, but Buccellato stayed on for a few more issues to wrap up remaining plot threads from their run, including key questions about Barry’s parents and his mother’s murder. Deadman and Green Lantern guest star.

Follow the adventures of Barry Allen from issues #1-12 of this new series as he struggles to balance his job as a police crime scene investigator, his unrequited crush on Iris West, and his new life as Central City’s guardian angel!

A few things of note:

  • It’s 12 issues — a whole year’s worth of comics.
  • They’re not calling it volume 1. That sounds to me like Season Zero will be done after 24 digital chapters, collected into 12 print issues, collected into one book. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Flash Season 1.5 comic next year.
  • Based on the current schedule, issue #12 will also be coming out in September, most likely the first week of the month. So either the release date here is wrong, or DC is releasing the collected edition the same day as the final print issue. That’s unusual, but maybe the audience for digital-to-print media tie-ins breaks down differently and the publisher doesn’t feel the need to postpone the collection they way they do with the print-first books. Or they’ve gotten positive data from Vertigo’s schedule of releasing collections during a skip month after each arc’s last chapter.

Flash Comics This Week: Convergence, Season Zero, Bloodlines and Eclipso

Convergence: The Flash #2Tomorrow night is the Flash TV show season finale! But there’s also plenty of Flash comics action as well.

A new digital Flash: Season Zero story, in which a figure from Dr. Caitlin Snow’s past returns to Earth with potentially deadly results. Correction: Written & drawn by Phil Hester, inks by Eric Gapstur, colors by Nick Filardi, letters by Deron Bennett.

Convergence: The Flash #2 (of 2) concludes the story of pre-Crisis Barry Allen vs. the Tangent Universe Superman. Dan Abnett, Federico Dallocchio, Jonboy Meyers.

On Wednesday, DC is also adding two more Flash Annuals from the 1987-2009 series to their digital backlist:

Flash Annual #5 (1992), part of the “Eclipso: The Darkness Within” event, has Golden Glider, Weather Wizard, Trickster and Captain Boomerang all trying to steal the same black diamond, only to become possessed by Eclipso as a result. Mark Waid, Craig Boldman, Travis Charest, Dan Davis.

Flash Annual #6 (1993), part of “Bloodlines,” introduces Argus, an undercover FBI agent who gains night-based powers when he’s caught in the middle of Keystone City’s mob war and a stealth alien invasion. Mark Waid, Phil Hester, Aaron McClellan.

Season Finale Extended Trailer

Here’s the one-minute trailer for The Flash‘s season finale. The episode will air next week, and is titled “Fast Enough”. The promo’s obviously full of spoilers, so be warned.

Looks like it’ll be pretty intense (and more than a bit sad). What do you think?

Flash #43 DC Bombshells Variant Cover Featuring Killer Frost by Ant Lucia

Flash #43 Bombshells Killer Frost Variant

DC is launching a second round of DC Bombshells variant covers featuring retro pinup versions of its characters — and a digital-first series — this summer. The Nerdist has several covers including The Flash #43 by Ant Lucia, featuring Killer Frost.

Newsarama has a round-up of all the covers released so far. One notable difference from the first round is that while the first round was all women, some of the covers feature men this time, including Sinestro, Dick Grayson, and Aquaman (and probably more, but I haven’t looked through the whole list yet).

Update: Apparently the the Bombshells series features “retro-bombshell versions of Batwoman, Wonder Woman and Supergirl in an alternate reality where super-powered female heroes are on the front lines in WWII” as well as “Monsters, magic, mayhem, & Marguerites” (the last item being a reference to the writer and artist on the series, Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage).

First Look At Legends of Tomorrow

Today we got our first trailer for the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow series, which will have 13 episodes and air in 2016. The promo does a pretty good job of introducing the characters and the premise, but it includes Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) among its cast, and will have at least a cameo from the Flash (Grant Gustin) and other Flashverse characters. One’s a surprise and you’ll see him in the trailer, but he’s still an obvious choice to appear. And we finally learn who the main villain will be.

Flashfans.org also has a behind-the-scenes featurette for the series, showing some of the stunts and including commentary from the showrunners. It’s made by the same creative team as The Flash and Arrow.

What do you think of the videos and premise? Are you thinking of checking out the show when it debuts?
