New Flashpoint Creative Teams & Covers Announced (UPDATED)

DC is announcing the creative teams and first covers for eight of the fifteen Flashpoint miniseries today. Each announcement comes along with yet another teaser.

DC seems to be announcing them alphabetically, but I’m moving the Flash-related ones up to the top because, well, this is a Flash site! So far we’ve got Citizen Cold, Batman: Knight of Vengeance, Deathstroke and the Curse of the Ravager, Deadman and the Flying Graysons, Hal Jordan (a new one), World of Flashpoint, Emperor Aquaman, and finally…Legion of Doom.

Flashpoint: Citizen Cold

“He loves someone he shouldn’t.”

I was fully expecting Scott Kolins as the artist on this book — his style is perfect for the modern take on the Rogues. But I wasn’t expecting a one-man show. I really figured Geoff Johns would want to write the Captain Cold mini himself.

Going by the weapons and gloves, those hands look like the Weather Wizard, Tar Pit, Fallout, the Trickster and the Mirror Master…opposed to Captain Citizen Cold. Update: I have some more commentary on this one.

Preview the Superboy/Kid Flash Race

DC has released a preview of next week’s Superboy #5, featuring a race between the Boy of Steel and Kid Flash. And check out that variant cover by Francis Manapul!

Bleeding Cool doesn’t list their source*, but they’re reporting the same creative teams that leaked a few weeks ago for the “Whatever Happened to Europe?” group of Flashpoint miniseries. If these come from an independent source, that lends more credence to the initial leak.

We’re keeping track of all the Flashpoint Creative Teams as they’re leaked or announced. Keep an eye on Speed Force and a bookmark on that link for updates!

*Understandable, since they usually report on items that are unofficial, not yet announced, etc., and want to protect their sources, but in this case, it leaves open the question of whether they got the info from industry sources or from the dozens of places that reported on the initial leak back in January. If the former, then it lends support to the information. If the latter, it doesn’t really tell us anything new.

Flashpoint: Questions and Answers

Over at The Source, Geoff Johns answers three questions about Flashpoint. Key items: “Flash will learn what the universe would be like if the world’s greatest super-heroes never became the world’s greatest super-heroes.” “You won’t just see the DC Universe shaken up, you’ll see characters you’ve never met who’ve come into existence because of the historical damage done to the past,” such as Element Woman [different from Element Girl?], Blackout, the Outsider [presumably not the Silver Age Batman villain, then], and the Resistance. [Interesting that “The Resistance” is a character, not an organization.] S!H!A!Z!A!M!

Most importantly: You don’t need to have read any specific stories to understand Flashpoint. “The Flash series and The Flash: Rebirth give you the foundation for Barry today, but even then Flashpoint #1 will tell you everything you need to know.” Familiarity with the normal DC Universe may help you appreciate the differences more, but “You’ll meet the world and characters as you enter the story.”

DC also unveiled a Flashpoint-style Green Lantern logo (at least I don’t remember seeing it before) and asked some leading questions:

  • Whatever *did* happen to the World’s Greatest Heroes?
  • Was Cyborg created to be their leader?
  • Who will the Resistance summon?
  • When do six become one?

Flashpoint to Trigger Wave of Cancellations?

Ah, rumors! First it was that DC would be renaming and renumbering their whole line to reflect the alternate reality of Flashpoint. Then, when the 15 tie-in miniseries were announced, people started hoping the regular books would go on hiatus to keep them from emptying their wallets.

Now, rumor site Bleeding Cool reports that DC will cancel a number of their lower-selling titles in order to make room in their publishing slate.

On one hand, it’s sad to see some of these titles rumored to get the axe in favor of an unrelated set of miniseries. On the other, the titles listed haven’t exactly been setting the shelves on fire, as this analysis of DC’s December sales shows. Flashpoint may have simply been the last nail, or just a convenient time.

And let’s be honest — this is still at the rumor stage. We’ll know more when May solicitations hit this afternoon.
